    Hi guys,

I have a laptop back home belonging to the brother and he wants to get it cleaned as its performance has deminished due to a spyware and virus build up. Was looking at different people who offer such a removal service and was wondering why there is such a varying price. Does anyone have any idea what an appropriate price for this service be? Keep in mind i mean call-out charge, cost per hour and then total cost...Can anyone help?

I don't know what the service costs. Head over to the Virus & Malware Removal forum and the lads will do it for free for you or at least point you in the direction where you would be able to manage it yourself. :) Just ask a mod to move this thread.

stick-dan, i think it has a lot to do with who ever is doing it for you.

when i did it, it was just me, my laptop and a pen drive with all programs needed to do it.

but lots of people in town doing it are running shop's aswel and need to cover bigger overheads.
i think most of them charge about 50 - 70 euro an hour.
i use to charge 30 quid for the complete job.
but to be honest, most of the time i would just back up they're important files and re-install windows.

i think 40 quid would be a very reasonable price.

It can be very expensive, and pretty much all the places that offer their services won't do much of a job at removing spyware. I will help you remove it if you wish

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

ASJ: So you dont agree that using HiJack this, Eset NOD32 / AVG Anti Spyware is sufficent? You refer to a lot of programs I aint really heard about, which always interests me :)

Btw, we charge €50 call out anywhere within city and county. Then €25 per hour physically working on the PC/Laptop. I always wondered were were over priced.. good to know what others charge.

No they are totally insufficient with todays malware. The amount of infections that HijackThis can't even detect, let alone remove, is crazy. Same goes for pretty much any anti-virus and anti-spyware program.

Your rates seem ok compared to others I have come across. I am curious as to how your staff would do against serious infections though(no offense intended, just curious).

Id come to Boards funnily enough. Its the only medium that is large enough and has people that know what there talking about.

Thankfully, we have managed to sort out all laptops/PCs without seeking third party help.
