[mods: I dunno where to put this, so move if ye have to]

Im plannin on gettin a HD LCD TV in the next month or so, as I watch a lot of films [on digital or DVD]

my TV atm is on its way out, and lets off a high-pitched noise

So, will my non-HD stuff like digital TV and DVDs look the same, better, or worse on a HD-Tv??

Im still plannin wether to get a PS3 or just a Bluray player, but it wont be for a while anyways

    Thanks!

Standard DVD/Broadcasts generally look closer to CRT quality on plasma TVs than LCD.

I just got a 42in plasma, sd sky looks very good on it, way better than my previous TV (LCD) I think it's cos plasma doesn't suffer from motion blur like lcds or something technical like that (so way better for watching sports) Also plasma is a lot better for movies cos the black levels are WAY better on them!

Really it's going to come down to the TV itself, some (both plasma and LCD) will look better than your CRT, others will look downright terrible. The best thing to do is to decide on your budget, have a look around the shops (or online if you're willing to buy a TV that way) to see what's available in that price range, then read reviews for each, comparisons where possible, and check places like the HE forums here or www.avforums.com for impressions.

There's not really one "best" model or make, every flat TV out there has problems and compromises so you need to do a bit of research to find the TV that has the compromises you can live with.

And try to avoid the whole LCD vs Plasma thing, unless you have sepcific requirements (for e.g. to use it as a PC moniter you're better with LCD) then it doesn't really matter. For general TV/movie viewing, all you're going to care about is the picture quality, not what technology is behind it, so just focus on makes/models.

Good points, however, it is generally accepted that plasma is better than lcd for
1, watching sd sky & sports
    2, watching movies

Which are the things the op is looking for mostly at the mo!

Also for dvds a good upscaling dvd player should be considered a must for displaying on a hd ready tv as it makes a huge difference!

I find that a good CRT will easily give a better picture than a Hi Def set when fed with a standard definition feed.
LCD picture will look jaggedy and blocky whereas a CRT will smoothen the picture.
There was a very interesting article in Spectrum magazine last year on the subject.
I have a 10 year old Sony Trinitron and the picture on it is exquisite .
A HD tv really only outperforms a good crt when the source is HD.

On the money, agree 100% with this guy

What if we got all the HD CRT tvs they got in America who knows what's possible

We have the samsung slimfit but that had geometry issues I think

    CRT for Standard Definition definately.
If you do get an LCD then also get an upscaling DVD player. It is a must.

In general yes, but there are many LCDs out there that beat many Plasmas, and vice-versa.

For e.g. I recently bought a samsung m8 series LCD, it has black levels that match or beat most plasmas and with a little tweaking it's SD picture beats my old Panasonic PD-30 CRT (which was an excellent CRT), it often looks like HD it's that good, and watching the footie last night was excellent. That said I'm sure a comparably priced panasonic plasma would do even better (and a Pioneer would beat both), but the majority of plasmas, or other LCDs wouldn't.

    Cheers for all the replies

As was said, the main reasons i'd be usin it is watchin DVDs and standard digital TV

Ill be buyin a PS3 or a standalone in the future, just not right away. I just want a new telly for now, as the pitch is really bad!

I just dont want the SD inputs to looks pixelated, as a CRT tv [as mentioned above] smoothes the image out, but I dont wanna spend money on a CRT that ill hafta sell when im gettin a HD-Tv. I'd rather stick with the decent quality til I get a PS3

So im gna shop around, see some of them in action in the shops, and ll defo look into an upscaling dvd player

    thanks a mil

I'd defo go for Plasma for those purposes you mentioned, any unbiased person will probably tell you the same thing! (like me! ;))

    Happy shopping anyways!

Searching for info on TV's and found this thread.

Can't agree more. I can never understand people raving on about LCD's when its glaringly obvious the picture for SD is worse. Which is what most people watch most of the time.

Only problem with CRT's is they can go soft, blurry over time, which most of the time can be corrected, but not always. Whereas this will never happen with a LCD.
