    Hey all,

I've started work in Airton Road, Tallaght and on Friday about 6pm I plan to leave work, make my way to the N4 and drive to Galway. Should I head up the M50 or avoid it and go via Belgard Road, Newlands Cross and Fonthill Road? Or some other way that is easy to remember and navigate? Thanks for any and all advice :)

    Another alternative might be N81-Citywest-N7-Kill-Straffan-M4.

The M 50 can be awful at this time, as is Newlands Cross. A route I would suggest is to as follows. I won't go into names of some of these roads as some of these are poorly signposted; work on the landmarks instead and you will be fine....

Go to Belgard Road, turn left at the traffic lights at the Belgard Pub. Head up this road until you come to a roundabout; take the last exit here.

Take this road until it ends (Super Valu on the right), take a right until it comes to an end; this is Cheeverstown Road. Take a right here and follow the road until you come to a roundabout at a pub (Heffernans and Londis), take the last exit. Follow this road until you come to another roundabout, where you take the last exit. This is Citywest estate (N 82).

Follow this road until you come to the N 7, go over the flyover and turn towards Dublin. You then take the immediate next slip road off (Marked Grange Cross/Baldonnell). Follow this dual carriageway all the way and it will take you to the Foxhunter/Woodys turn off on the N 4 and (hopefully) traffic that moves.

If you can, I'd try leave as late as possible to let traffic ease off and travel after 6:30PM.

Ok. This route might sound mad, but it isn't in practise. It cuts out Lucan bypass, Kilbeggan, Moate:eek: and the tailback at the Athlone bypass.

Take Ham'nd'Eggers route to the N7. But head south towards Naas and onto the M7. Take the Monasterevan exit and follow the signs for Portarlington.(Road number R420) Head through Portarlington to Tullamore. In Tullamore, take the N52 south towards Birr. You'll soon reach a place called the Blue Ball. Turn right here onto the R357 and head through Shannonbridge and on to Ballinasloe.

Just another option to consider. On a Friday it will save you time and is less stressful.

I sometimes leave Friday evenings @20:00 to Athlone, Airton Rd - Lucan lights via M50 15-20 mins, 5 mins at lights then clear the remainder. If you can do flexi time it's worth the wait, a lot less stressful. Geep am eye on the M50 developments as it should soon be opening up to 3/4 lanes and may again become useable during peak times.

Another variation of this and currently my favourite! Again most useful for Bank Holiday weekends!
Take DW route but head to Mountmellick from Portarlington(left turn at edge of town which goes over the railway bridge).Once in town left for Birr/Rosenallis, follow the road straight all the way to Birr, take first exit on roundabout in town and after a mile take right for Portumna. From there follow signs to Galway(takes you through to N6 about a mile before the start of Loughrea. This way avoids all towns that can have traffic probs.

Feck it, I'm gonna get the Luas to Heuston and grab the 7:15pm train to Galway! At least I can travel in comfort.
