    Hi,

My girlfriend is writing a piece on piracy for her college magazine and asked me if I would put up a quick survey for her on boards.

If you could answer the following truthfully:

    1. Do you download music/films illegally on campus?
    2. What is the college policy on illegal downloads?
    3. Do you know of anyone that has been caught downloading music/films on campus. If so, how were they punished?
    4. What are your reasons for downloading music/films?

    Thanks.

    1. Do you download music/films illegally on campus? on campus? no
    2. What is the college policy on illegal downloads? no such activity is allowed, period
    3. Do you know of anyone that has been caught downloading music/films on campus. If so, how were they punished? not that i'm aware. i recall someone being punished for playing counter-strike before, so i assume they can track open ports that use bittorrent etc.
    4. What are your reasons for downloading music/films? not paying for stuff i normally wouldn't look at/listen to. if i like something i will genuinely purchase it though

do people do this on college for sure, in fact i can name lecturers who i know for sure do it , i have even seen them doing it and talked to them about it . (of course i would never name names)

but if you think its not going on well, then your out of touch really and most likely live far far away .......on Moonbase Alpha or something ( but i must say it not as bad as some other colleges )

reasons for doing it ............student i.e. no money ( and if its a movie i really like or game i really like i will buy it when it comes out) and in the case of movie go and see it

another reason is just the time part of it , i download the lastest south park or other american shows (and movies) just mainly because i dont want to wait for it to be on here, ( hmm i can see their actually trying to cut down on this , i remember the gap between lost in american and on rte or sky was weeks now its like days )

"i recall someone being punished for playing counter-strike before, so i assume they can track open ports that use bittorrent etc."

    hahhahahahahaha

    1) No. I'll watch youtube if I'm really bored.
    2) The college policy is outlined in most computer rooms and libraries. Inside the door of the library computer room in Kevins Street is a document stating whats allowed and what isn't. It's a general no porn/violence in text or image form thing.
    3) No.
    4) Downloading music: I'll do it because I'm not arsed paying so much in Ireland. We are ripped off, and when we get a cheaper way of buying it, the irish companies kick up stink and get them stopped (a la Play.com 5 years ago). I spend my money wisely. If something isn't worth the price people are asking for it, I will pay cheaper for it elsewhere. In this case, I get it for free. When Irish companies learn to lower prices to acceptable levels, I'll start buying them again.

I don't download films because... I don't really watch films.

Yah, it was some guy from another Uni. He was temporarily expelled from the college.

    4. What are your reasons for downloading music/films?

It's better being a pirate than joining the Navy.

As a member of DIT's IT Support:
    1. No, I have no time. I'm fixing computers damaged by malicious software and illegal downloads.
    2. Users are required to abide by the law, by these Regulations, by the Data Protection Legislation, by the HEAnet Acceptable Usage Policy, and by any additional regulations as may be laid down from time to time, in relation to the proper usage of computer equipment and materials. Full usage regulations can be found at
    http://www.dit.ie/DIT/itsupport/regulations/student/index.html
    3. I catch students at this all the time. Little is generally done, but the regulations do allow for action including suspension/expulsion.
    4. Freebies
