but, i'm worried there;s something wrong. The fan noise is really really loud.

    Is this normal?

It can be quite loud when it kicks in but it usually dosen't kick in unless its been running for a while or its doing something pretty intensive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭swingking

mine kicked in as soon as it was first turned on

Fan kicks in when charging too and also if the vents are covered( ie if its on your lap)

It's also showing as the battery as not being available. The battery icon has an x in the middle of it and it says no batteries available.

    The battery is inserted though!!

I would send the MB in for exchange. Not worth the effort or time figuring out the causes over a brand new machine.

I left the macbook for a while and came back to it now. Since then two things have happened:

    1. The charging light has come on for the first time since I first turned on the machine

    2. The fan noise has completely stopped.

I have contacted apple who informed me that they would replace the machine as soon as possible.

But for the time being it's possible to use it

ring apple immediately.....call the sales line and tell them that you have just received your machine but that you believe it is DOA (dead on arrival)....have your Web Order number handy.

The machine doesn't have to be completely dead for it to be declared DOA, though a battery snafu like that is good ammunition for it being declared dead. They will arrange for the collection of the machine and send you a new one.

Macbook fans kick in a lot if you're doing more than browsing the web, watching a movie or listening to music. When compiling code or encoding video mine comes on and it's loud enough.

If it's on all the time, or comes on a lot under light load, you could try resetting the SMC, which involves unplugging the machine, removing the battery and holding the power button down for 5 seconds.

Ridiculously high prices, can't buy the first generation of anything, burning hot machines, dodgy motherboards, battery problems, discolourations, hours on the phone to Apple support, bad batches of screens, lack of support for most software applications.. Welcome! You'll love it!

And yet you yourself continue to buy Apple's.

Indeed . . . makes you wonder why anyone would want anything to do with Apple . . . including forums relating to them . . .

Personally I've had more Apple items than I can remember and I've never had cause to call Apple support other than the MBP battery replacement scheme which wasn't Apples fault in fairness and they replaced it within 3 days.

    I've had 4 or 5 different iPods (I confess, I'm a gadget freak :) ) I have/had 9 or 10 different Macs - iMac G3 and G4, PowerMac G3, G4 and G5, Cube, 4 different Apple notebooks, iBook, Powerbook G3 and G4 and MacBook Pro first gen.

None of these items ever gave me cause to complain. Things break through carelessness - if you're careful with things they last longer I find. I'm not in the habit of throwing a 2000 quid MBP around the place so my 2 year old MBP is in the same condition as it was when new and I'm not exaggerating !

Apple make pioneering products from time to time - the Touch and the iPhone for example - new cutting edge technology always has teething issues, the first iPods were cursed with poor batteries. Nowadays they're on par with any other maker. I have a first gen Touch and it's perfect ! I also have a first gen 5GB iPod, almost 7 years old, still working thanks to a new battery.

The more standard products made by Apple tend to be reliable and free of defects. This happens over time, problems reveal themselves in use and are fixed so that the next generation of the product is better.

It seems fashionable to be anti-Apple nowadays but remember there are bigger companies than they who have screwed up - Sonys battery woes are well publicised, Xbox light of death problems abound, PSP screens etc. etc.

If you want to own cutting edge technology then you accept these teething problems. If you don't want it then buy an abacus !!!

Yea, and crashing HDDs right under Apple's nose. Looks as if Mac users are suckered by Apple, but hey! we love the "chase" as long as the end result is fun, innovative and fashionable.

Has anyone read the Wired article on Apple's 10 biggest flops?

I'm guessing the Newton and the Cube are both in there?
People used to turn my Cube off while I was working buy setting an A4 page on the top of it.

    Update:

    Received an email from apple

    Dear Sir,

Thank you for contacting the Apple Store.

Following your request, we have created a replacement Z0FJ MACBOOK 13.3/2.1/WHT/CTO for your order. Your replacement is scheduled for dispatch by 17/03/2008.

Our carrier will contact you within the next 48 hours to make an appointment for the collection of the original item(s). Please pack the item(s) you are returning along with any cables and documentation in the original packing materials and ensure any personal items (CDs, DVDs) are removed.
To help us process the return, please clearly mark the box with the Returns number 7412448567.

Please ensure to obtain a signed collection note from the carrier to proof the return of the item(s).

    Kind Regards,
    The Apple Store

Is this normal to wait for the 17th for them to dispatch the item (never mind how long it takes for me to get the replacement)

    Another wait I guess.

    :(

While I'll admit Apple quality control has taken a turn for the worse lately, people need to remember that on support forums you here more BAD than good reports of hardware be it Apple, Dell, HP, whoever.

I've bought quite a few first get Apple machines including the first Intel iMac and the iBook and have had no problems.

My Santa Rosa Macbook also works without issue (although it's fit and finish isn't what I expect from Apple) and I've got a 3rd gen iPod that STILL works!

Of course, this is no consolation when you drop a lot of money on a machine only to get nothing but grief from it. I've been on that side of the fence too :(

    ..............

indeed it does appear to be the new thing to Apple-bash, but speaking from my own experience I have to say that despite the odd snafu with quality control i've been thoroughly satisfied with customer service and my usage experience.

I too have had iPods since the 1st generation. In fact i think I have owned one from every generation. Most have been trouble free, i did have a HD fail on me but they replaced that without quibble and had an earphone jack issue...again replaced without question.

My PowerBook arrived DOA and had a replacement within 4 working days. Having worked in the CE and computer industry for a time I can safely say that NO company or product is defect free. DOA's always happen and most companies have contingencies for it.

I have had cause to deal with Apple customer relations directly on a number of occasions and have always found myself treated fairly, equitably and promptly.....but perhaps this is just my experience.

Sure early adopters face uncertainty, but as pointed out - this is a known quantity and glitches DO get ironed out. Remember that Apple isn't the only world-class company with rev.1 uncertainty......Sony, Toshiba, M$....etc
