An unarmed garda today arrested a gunman who pointed a loaded shotgun at him during an attempted pub raid in Dublin.

The officer overpowered the would-be raider as he was demanding cash from a barman at gunpoint in The Villager bar in Chapelizod.

“As two gardaí got closer, the gunman turned and pointed the gun at one of the garda members, who reacted quickly and disarmed him,” a Garda spokesman said.

“A loaded shotgun was seized. No shots were fired.

“Both gardaí who dealt with this incident were unarmed and uniformed.”

The man was arrested and is being questioned under Section 30 of The Offences Against The State Act.

The officers from Ballyfermot Garda Station had responded within five minutes to the incident at 12.45am today.

They were met by the owner, who told them that there was a man on the premises with a gun.

“He also informed them that there was a barman and a number of patrons inside,” the Garda spokesman added.

“On entering the premises, the two gardai were pointed towards the store room by a number of patrons. At the store room they saw a man with a gun demanding cash from the barman.”

The gunman then turned his weapon on the officer, who quickly disarmed him and made an arrest.

Well done to the Garda and his/her colleague..:)

I remember in the late 80's maybe early 90's reading the Garda Review when it was a much better magazine, they used to run stories of incidents from the member's point of view. These 2 members were chasing a stolen car (i think) but the car turned into a cul de sac and the driver jumped out and jumped a wall. Both guards jumped the same wall and arrested the man but when they returned to the wall where the patrol car was on the other side they realised the wall was just over 6 ft high. Now when they jumped that wall going after your man they only used one hand!!

    Now thats adrenaline for ye

Does nobody else think this was a little irresponsible?

That they didn't let the ERU or an armed unit Deal with it you mean?

Fair play to the lads in fairness. They'll get Scotts medals for bravery I'd say.

The situation was dealt with without anyone getting harmed and that is the most ideal way for any situation to end, so in my opinion, they did the right thing.

    Excellent work

Maybe for the best, lets say armed unit delt with it, suspect points weapon at them could have resulted in them shooting him. Then their jobs are on the line for doing their duty

Although could have been exactly like Traffic Corps garda in North Strand

But it ended well and fair play guys [both jumping the wall and tackling the gunman]

Jaysus... that's like running up two buses on top of one another. The mind boggles. Wonder if there was a ladder or anything.

That is the nature of the job. Confront the gun man. If you feel that you can talk him into putting it down well and good. If you feel he is not responding to your requests then back off a little and wait for armed back up.

Fortunately this happened in a city so armed back up is usually minutes away. In rural areas however we have no armed back up at night. In that situation we would our communication skills or use sheer numbers of gardai but that would probably involve a car chase and the helo

One could say that it was, however, the opertunity was there to tackle & apprehend the gunman. I sure the officers concerned weighed up their options in split second timing before detaining this person. I say well done, good crime arrest.

If they hadn't have dealt with him there'd be people moaning that they didn't do their jobs.

fair play to the two Gardai.....
but i cant help thinking, if shot were fired or anybody injured, there would be no talk of Scott Medals, etc, etc.....all we'd hear about is how the Garda Ombudsman Commission is investigating.

the situation worked out and will be used for good PR, but if anything went wrong "Why didnt they wait for armed assistance....etc?",.......it just goes to show again how uniformed members are litterally putting their life on the line every day.

anyway, i reckon "Well Done" to the two Gardai, id love to be able to say that i'd do the same, if i was in the same position. "Well Done" again.

good job by the cops, but it really is madness all the same unarmed cops in this day and age being put in such a position, we can pretend ireland doesnt need armed police but we are only fooling ourselves

Although I don't fully disagree with you I don't believe that we need a fully armed service yet. No doubt is just a few short years way if the current trend of serious crime continues.

However I don't think the public are ready for it yet and neither are the servicing members. The Government are definitely not ready because they still will not give us the proper resources and training such as driving, radio system, cars etc. Even basic skills such as training in speed detection devices, stinger, intoxilyzer are pretty much out of everyone's reach except for the bare few.

Can you imagine if we cannot access these basic things, how the hell could we possibly get proper training for firearms for the whole force???

    It ain't gonna happen.
