The yellow car is a DAF im thinking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,454 ✭✭✭tc20

Sorry lads, couldn't make it in the end...:(
Looked like a good turn out, and much better weather than the last time too!

Missed it too - only passed the gathering spot about 4:30pm coming back from Carlow.

Had to postpone my trip home due to much booze on Saturday night!

Looked like fun. Good pics too.

Indeed, a DAF 46. From the side view, it sort of looks like a hybrid of a Triumph Dolomite and a Trabant 601!

sorry. I missed this too. A full days golf on Saturday required some payback. Anyhow in the middle of replacing the head gasket on my other classic at the moment so the spare time needs to be spent there until finished!!

See you at the next meeting hopefully.

Nah, even from the side a 46 is different, it had a rounder nose of the 55. It's a 66 with go-faster Paddy Hopkirk roof rack I hadn't bothered to take off. :o

It goes better than it looks!

The DAF was the "variomatic" version...

I will let "MacP" explain, all I could see was a big rubber band ;)

Version? They were all Variomatics! If you've ever worked on a twist 'n' go scooter you'll have a good idea how it works. It's a clever system of weights, belts and pulleys with a bit of vacuum thrown in for good measure. Really not that complicated when you see it running.

YouTube Clip of one This clip is shot from the back of the car looking forwards.

They all run two big rubber bands (except the 46 which only has one) and it allows you to limp on if and when one of them goes bang. It very alarming to have one explode at speed, which happened to me once on it's dodgy original belts at 60mph and it was like a cannon going off in the car! Providing you periodically check and adjust the belts it should be a rare occurrence.

    Anyone fancy a race.................in reverse?
