7 modern sins in digital photography?

I have an idea about Challenge that could turn into exhibition. The theme is "7 modern sins" according to Vatican.

    The modern sins are:
    • Environmental pollution
    • Genetic manipulation
    • Accumulating excessive wealth
    • Inflicting poverty
    • Drug trafficking and consumption
    • Morally debatable experiments
    • Violation of fundamental rights of human nature

So my idea is set of 7 photos from Ireland. The set should be "set" so no random photos. Tonality, colours, processing - that all should be in line of the set.

Do you think that we could do something like that? And after that even try to exhibit the best sets?

That sounds really interesting .. & challenging.
    • Genetic manipulation
    • Inflicting poverty
    • Drug trafficking and consumption
    • Morally debatable experiments
These 4 would be particularly challenging for me...

    Genetic manipulation - supermarket.
    Poverty - main streets.
Alcohol and nicotine are also drugs.
Healthcare (waiting hours at A&E) - isn't it a great experiment?

But those are MINE ideas :-)

    Sounds good to me.

Given that I've started 4 projects recently why not add no.5.

And why not make it even more interesting and match a "traditional" deadly sin with each of the "modern" ones to kinda show nothing changes just the specifics as it were?

I was thinking really hardcore.. like going undercover to get a really cool drug smuggling shot!! :D
It's *Inflicting* Poverty.. that's different to Poverty??
I'd best go to confession for the 5 coffees & 10+ cigarettes I've had so far today too!

It would certainly force people to think "outside the box" and of course you'd have to find subjects that wouldn't sue! :D

going slighty off topic, if you take a picture of someone in the background and they didn't want to be in the picture would "blurring" the image over the face/identifable marks etc. cover you ?
kinda like the cop shows on tv where people's faces are blurred out ?
    just curious :)

Doubt it. The rules as far as I know are fairly blurry, pun intended.
If they could argue that they were part of focal point of the picture then you could get in trouble.

Then there is that case of the pedo that blurred his face and the police “de-blurred” it – it could be argued that blurring isn’t exactly fool proof.

One month? Midnight of the 10th April? Just a suggestion.

So , is that one deadly sin, old or new version?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 885 ✭✭✭Spyral

A month seems good ... just have to make sure not to fail finals :p

also it might be fun if we had the 7 deadly sins of photography such as

    1) chimping
    2) measurbating
    3) entering into cannon vs nikon argument
    4) entering into film vs digital argument
    5) plagarism
    6) not cleaning your lenses
    7) overusing photoshop

    :P

:D I had to google what chimping meant and I thought number 2 was a typo initially.. I'm cool with 3 to 6 inclusive but I refuse to join the church of photography unless they allow me to have my wicked way with photoshop! :(

well there's touching up and calibrating a picture... then theres going totally ott and making every mental and uber looking even if you have no photographic skill !

Measurbating is on kenrockwell and I agree I knew a bloke like that once..

..in other news I'm upgrading my film camera :P

Okay, so I get all of it with the exception of this? Help, anyone?

I am sorry for being so quite. Well, most of the people I know like when I don't say a thing... :-)

Well the easiest way is to go BW and process a lot. But the spirit is in working with some style. Or in some way how you feel or how were you inspired recently. You can trace your development by looking at older pictures.

I might try to do that with my phone - most of the topics are already planned.

Hmmm.. It'd be interesting to try and do this but I have no clue when it comes to any sort of processing...

So as someone else asked, will it be the old ones or modern ones?

This challenge seems to have gone by the way side... A new challenge or a new submit date for the Devon said Lee sins?

Pardon my stupidity but what are
    Chimping
    and
    Measurbating.
I hope I haven't done any of them. I agree with the other five points. I would also consider adding "Technique retention" Share the knowledge folks.

Chimping - means you look at every shot after you take it to review the quality (and discard the bad ones). Something I unashamedly sometimes do (it's a major benefit of digital photography that you get instant feedback, why not use it when appropriate?)

Measurbating - blowing images up to 400% and complaining/comparing them to other images blown up to ridiculous levels. Especially laughable if you never print above 8x10" prints and don't significantly crop your image. Saying things like - the extinction resolution of my lens is 2100lph but yours is only 1800lph (true photographers do not care about these precise laboratory numbers (which do not occur in real life anyway) but whether the image quality is "good" enough or not.) Other examples would be "lens A exhibits a 1.2% light fall-off at f2.8 and lens B has ONLY a 1.1% fall-off at the same aperture...therefore lens B absolutely destroys lens A etc. etc." truth is we won't see any difference at real life sizes and prints. But as with any hobby people will argue over the tiniest things.

There were no entries, so this challenge has been closed.
At least we have talked about it.

I would like to ask our mods to delete or at least to lock this thread.

    Thank you.
