Am I right in remembering that Nationwide already did a small feature on IWW (maybe last year) - I think it interviewed SOS and maybe MMM

I think that was some Dublin show, but it was the same format as Nationwide

Quick question lads, just to satisfy my curiosity. I don't follow wrestling but I was watching Diary of a Sports Star last night because one of my friends was on it. Anyway on the segments for the wrestling guy the narrator (and only the narrator) kept refering to "whip wrestling" as if it was a special type of wrestling, referring to the guy as a "whip wrestling instructor" for example. Now I understad that the club/organisation in the programme was called Irish Whip Wrestling but I always thought that it was named after the "Irish Whip" move. So is there actually a type of wrestling called "whip wrestling" or is TV3's research department just really really bad?

You're right, they got it wrong. IWW seem to get that a lot, I suppose it's a logical conclusion if you don't know anything about wrestling

Despite not knowing the guy or being a wrestling fan I was actually quite annoyed on the wrestler's behalf. I mean could they not be bothered to find out a bit more about the very subject of their documentary? A simple "where'd you get the name?" or even "what's whip wrestling?" would have done. Really unprofessional.

My favourite parts were the Bruiser attacking a concrete wall and the surfer guy missing out on the national surfing competition (after they built it up for the whole show) because well he went surfing somewhere else and forgot the time.

I'm not a big fan of watching prime time documentaries on wrestling that keep up the illusion that wrestling is not staged, especially in 2008. To be fair though, I thought he came across pretty well especially the times when wrestling wasn't the focus.

Completly off topic I know but on the subject of wrestling doc's have many of you guys seen the episode of Loius Theroux's weird weekend when he spent time with WCW and another indy promotion in the States(possibly IWA Midsouth)
Its the most balanced doc about the business Ive seen and anyone that hasnt should check it out if you can.
It gave a good insight(I thought)into the huge companies and the small indy companies.
Havnt seen it in quite a while.Would be interested to see if many/any of the wrestlers, particularly from the WCW power plant are in any of the more well known modern promotions--TNA,CZW etc.

I'm in total agreement. I thought Ballymunn Bruiser came across as a complete joke in it to be honest. The bit where he kept shouldering the the concrete wall was the funniest thing I've seen on TV since they aired the last episode of the Office. Especially the bit when he finally finished, delighted with himself at the intelligence of his act, only for the camera to pan out towards a load of young fella's, half of them laughing at him, the other half looking at him like he was a total idiot.

Even better was the bit where he gave his girlfriend a back suplex and she looked like she was about to burst into tears!

I was watching it with a friend whos not a fan of wrestling at all and to be honest I was cringing with embarrassment. If IWW want to promote themselves they'd be well advised to put someone on air who can actually string a sentence together.

I think that's very unfair. He was well able to talk.

I'm with you on keeping the whole thing kayfabed being silly. It benefits nobody by doing that.

I think that's very unfair. He was well able to talk.

I'm just giving my friend's opinion, who as I said is a non-wrestling fan, he couldn't get over the fact that a company trying to promote itself as a wrestling compnay would put a guy with his look and lack of eloquence on national television. Its always good to hear what non-wrestling fans make of our hobby when it gets national exposure:this time it was a total embarrassment.

To quote him "I thought wrestler's were supposed to be in shape? He looks like a guy who's eaten too many pies, not someone who trains seriously, I thought this TV programme was about sportespeople? And he's putting me to sleep banging on about being a hardman when all he does is pretend to fight!"

As I said the view a non-wrestling fan viewer. To be honest my overall feeling was pity for Bruiser, he looked out of his depth and just not ready for a project on this scale.

I thought he came across quite well. His promos skills in comparison to the other guys were just far superior and outside kayfabe he seemed a decent guy who is passionate about what he does. I dont follow IWW and never will and last night was an example of why. Its just so dingey and unprofessional and not representative of how wrestling really can be (eg Wrestlemania 24). He looked pretty pissed off when that other guy went into business for himself but he played along well and made sure the segment came off right. Overall a good doc but it has well and truly obliterated the miniscule chance that I would ever pay any attention to IWW.

I agree with alot of your points. I just think to say he can't put a sentence together is flat out wrong. I wouldn't describe him as eloquent but he was well able to talk like any other person his age and seemed like a good guy.

To me, I think he had a story that people would have gotten into alot more if they had just left the whole "wrestling is real" garbage alone which would turn alot of non wrestling fans off and make wrestling fans cringe (at least I did).

If I was doing it, I would have really honed in on the key message of the story which was that he was using wrestling as a way to escape his world around him.

Exactly, the whole approach to the documentary was totally wrong. They would have been far better advised just acknowledging that no one would buy into a kayfabed approach to the thing. There's plenty of genuine hard work that trainee wrestlers put in that could have been alluded to. They could have brought a bit of respect to wrestling for once, instead it just provided more ammunition to people weho look down their noses at it. In general it was a total PR disaster for IWW, anyone over the age of 6 who was even considering going to a show who hadn't been before would have been completely put of by the ridiculous attempt to maintain kayfabe.

There's no doubt that was all scripted, making that stupid staged tantrum backstage even more laughable. God it was embarrassing.

In fairness now, you are comparing IWW, a fledgling promotion in a country where you could count the amount of wrestling fans in the hundreds rather than thousands, to the biggest in the world with an unlimited budget. Bad point of reference.

A more suitable reference would maybe when 1PWs (or are they RQW) Hated Heroes appeared on Big Brothers Little Brother last year. While they kept in character to some degree, they also alluded to the fact that wrestling is not real, which made their appearance all the more believable, and they came across a lot more legit, if any of that makes sense, as I'm not sure it does.

Personally I don't think Irish wrestling in general is ready for TV in any way, shape or form, same as the eircom league wasn't for years either (and some would argue still isn't), but it took its time, with an almost softly softly approach, and now it is becoming more accepted.

There was a programme on TG4 a couple of weeks ago, think it was called Rua, but it was about people with red hair and SOS was on it. Don't know if anyone saw that one?

It seems like Irish wrestlers are getting attention from the media but is it having a positive effect on sales?

I'm not suggesting IWW could ever live up to that. I'm saying that the casual fan would have a choice between IWW or WWE, which are they more likely to be attracted to?

Agreed it came off as terrible. Comparing IWW to Wrestlemania is stupid though different ballgame altogether. I just think there were other directions they could have gone with the PW aspect of the show. Kayfabe can be used a little theres no harm to it. But yer man was punching ****ing walls and generally overplaying everything. Fair fooks to IWW for getting some more exposure though.

i haven't seen the tv show so i can't comment directly on it but bruiser would readily admit he is not "eloquent" in the slightest or never will be, you need to remember the dude is only 18 or 19

I remember training with the ballymun bruiser while I was in IWW.He was at the very most the same age as myself, and I just turned 20 a couple of months ago.Infact,i'm fairly certain that he is no older than 19 at the moment.
We had a great time doing promo's with each other. He was certainly VERY passionate about wrestling back then and even moreso whenever i've spoken to him since.
He's a fairly sound guy actually

He came across that way in the film. He wasn't really the problem in the documentary I didn't think. It was the whole direction of it more than anything else.

The bits where he wasn't in character so to speak were very good I thought. He definitely had a story that people would have got into but by keeping 90% of it kayfabe, your slapping viewers in the face.
