Weak heart muscles

    Hi,

My GF's dad went to hospital about 2 weeks ago with a lump on his leg - docs checked and was nothing serious. however while there, they noticed an irregularity with his heartbeat. So they kept him in to do a number of tests (stress test etc...)

They weren't happy with these - his heart was not pumping enough blood as it should. They sent him to Dublin to get an angiogram (thinking it was most likely a blocked valve). He got the results back today and the Docs have said that he doesn't have a blockage. But his hart muscle has been damaged - most likely as a result of heavy flue he had recently. They are now referring him to his GP (persumably to discuss lifestyle changes) but say they cant repair the damage. He's being released tonight.

Has anyone ever come across this before?

    On two points:

    Is this a serious problem?
Have the docs done enough to solve the problem? or at least properly address it.

I'm very worried about the situation and there doesn't seem to be any clear answers coming from the professionals. Should he seek a second opinion and if so, do you know of anywher that would be recommended.?

    Thanks

To be honest, I don't know much about what you can do to build up the muscle in the heart. I'm presuming just rest & maybe if he was on meds, it took alot out of his heart to do it.

As to seeking a second opinion. Yes maybe but also at the same time, that could cause more stress on him & not be good for his heart so hopefully everyone supporting him is calm and not stressing out too much and upsetting him.

I'd say it might be a pretty common thing. What is his lifestyle like? Is he overweight, a smoker, high blood pressure, heavy salt/ fat intake etc?

    I hope he gets better!

Could be a post infectious dilated cardiomyopathy. Difficult to know whether or not its serious as there doesnt seem to be a diagnosis.

As to releasing him to gp care i would say they have not done enough to inform his relatives/you about his problem.
