Ok, my current camera is a Pentax Option (3MP). Its done my well over the years but its really starting to show its age now. My little sister bought herself a €100 Samsung 10MP camera and the photoquality is amazing compared to mine.

What i'm wondering what is a good brand to go with when it comes to compacts? My requirements are pretty much the holy grail of compacts but lets see whats currently available.

I'm planning on doing a backpacking trip for a year or so I'd like a camera that

    - Takes great still shots and also night shots (something I've never seen a compact do well)
    - Great battery life
    - Good video quality
    - SD card compatible (4GB+)
    - Decent Optical zoom (is it too much to ask for at least 5x?)

    All recommendations appreciated.

    FinePix F40fd

I cannot recommend this camera enough. Small, durable, great battery life, 8.3MP, fantastic picture quality ( it's all i use at the moment if you take a quick look at my DA in my sig to check the quality of the shots ) and SUCKS in light as well.

As far as i am aware right now it's about 240eu with a 2G card in most shops.

I have one, another friend has one and the REAL photographer amond us who is normally armed for bear is thinking about changing her compact to one as well.

The video function is great and i am currently using SD memory cards with it.

I can recommend the Canon G9 but it is more expensive than the other camera mentioned above [450 euro on Pixmania right now].

It's 12.1 mp with very good high ISO handling (for a compact), 6X optical zoom (though the 'wide' end isn't very wide), flash hot-shoe (with full Canon TTL metering), built-in 4X Neutral Density filter and it's made of metal so it should survive tough conditions.

The battery seems to last forever. I charged my one a month ago and used it on and off since, and just had to recharge it again last night. Takes SD cards too.

I would recommend the kodak z1275, 12 mp, 30fps hd video and 5X optical zoom. sd compatable and up to 3600 iso setting. i would also recommend a pack of 4X 2700 mah AA bateries to go with it - €11 in maplin. The camera takes 2X AA's but regular ones wont last long. very compact and looks great, I got one a few weeks ago and its brilliant! only €180 in argos :)

i've got a Canon G7 - it's pretty good but like all compacts suffers from a tiny sensor, shutter lag and poor ISO. Probably ok for popping in your pocket and such but not a serious replacement for a DSLR.
