What NUIG needs

So, with all those elections of some kind happening, it got me thinking about what stuff needs to be improved in Nuig?

The 3 things that I'd like most to see changed, are first and foremost more carpark spaces, also fixing bloody Computer Services, and improving the state of the lecture halls (perfect example, Dillon).

I'll add that I'm only a fresher  so I' sure that theres other possibly more critical things that need to be improved on campus taht I'm not aware of yet.

Car park spaces. Defo. But in the near future it looks like we're going to get less. There should be more quite obviously.

Computer services are a joke and badly need fixing.

However the elections won't make a difference to this they have no power

Looks like? More like, we will definatly have less spaces. The new engineering building is to be built opposite the Cairnes building in that gravelly car park there. Dont know where they can put the cars after that goes up, fortunatly I should be gone by then.

Id like to see someone take on the issue of library opening hours, especially around exam time. Its an issue which is brought up every Christmas and summer and nothing is ever done about it. 6 or 7 weekends a year of long hours in the library isnt going to break the bank. Plenty of colleges have 24 hour librarys.... dont they... or did I dream that?

As far as i know the plans were to build a multi-story car pack in Daingean and have a shuttle bus service to the campus from there. this car park would of course be operated by a private company. no idea what become of those plans though, if they are still in place....

And if this idea does go ahead, im guessing it wont be free??

Traffic out dangan at 9am is bad enough now, nevermind with half the college driving population going there at 9am. The bus would have to leave at about 8.40 from dangan to arrive at college for 9am, unless it goes through corrib village. Still, if im going to head for a bus to college at 8.40, id nearly try find a space in the college grounds itself because its that early, then when I dont find a space and i make my way to dangan (having presumably missed the bus) Ill have to get the next one, which probably wont arrive before 9am. So now im late.

Solution... ill park in one of the estates surrounding the college! People do it already so whats to stop them doing in the future when theres less parking near the college.
Estates will hate the students for it, cars will be abandoned more around the surround estates. Its a bad look for the college.

    Rant over... for now.

Ps. I dont park in estates surrounding the college. Unless you count parking outside my girlfriends which is near the college grounds.

I think that 24 hour opening hours in the library is a good idea, in particular around exam time. I know they were planning to do this in UCC this year with the opening of the new library, and I think that for some people, if not myself, it would be really useful. But even and improvement on the opening hours would be great.

Again, in UCC, there is a Park and Ride system in place. It's really popular and as far as I can remember it's either free or really cheap. The problem with parking was worse around UCC than it is in NUIG so NUIG would definitely benefit from something like that. If they built a multi-story car park though they would definitely charge for it and it wouldn't be cheap. (Like the tiny car park next to UCC where you have to pay unlike in Galway so we do have it good here....if you can manage to get a space!)

    Why?
We dont have parking for cars nevermind a jet.... or any use for it!

And as for the girls with guns... thats a dangerous combination. Sure they might be hot in the picture, but think about it. Its Galway, if its not raining its cold, or a combo of the two! Theyll be hidden away like all other NUIG girls under layers of Hoodies and those stupid Ugg boots.

On that note, we need an anti-ugg boot law at NUIG.

A room that when you walk into it, it dries your clothes that are drenched from that walk into college in the lashing rain.
Also a tunnel from Nun's Island to the main college with an under ground shuttle train. That'd be nice

24hr library is crazy, open till midnight is more then enough,
also later opening times at the weekend,so everyone isn't crammed into that goddamn reading room.

Definitely more car parking spaces if it will stop people parking outside our house on Snipe Avenue... there were TWENTYFIVE cars there one day we're freaking so if youre one of those people who have heard about the 'place to park' STOP IT!! Often cant find a place to park myself outside my own bloody house... ok rant over!

as far as i know , the parking is a complete non-issue in terms of it ever being developed.

it will simply be ignored, as it has been explicitly said that no more spaces will be allocated for NUIG parking anywhere

generally NUIGs attitude is that "you should be happy to be here"

ive noticed that in respect of so many things , old computers , overfilled lecture halls , no parking

If we all got parachuted into college we wouldn't have to park.

Or you could just try live close enough to college to walk

What's needed is a light rail system and a roof over the entire campus. Every few days I've to walk from the Quad to the Cairnes building in the rain. I've had enough of it y'hear!

I would like to say that I officially don't care what NUIG needs anymore because as of 4 o clock today I am finished lectures FOREVER and sure wont the exams be off campus anyway!

(But yes, a roof over campus, or even over Galway, would be good!)

The college applied for permission to concrete over one of the pitches in Dangan and they have received it.

NUI Galway has got the go-ahead for a park n' ride at the University.
The facility will cater for 500 cars at Upper Newcastle Road and will shuttle students and staff to the main campus for free.

See, asking nicely on boards.ie does produce results :D

You are right; it seems there won't be more parking spaces allocated to NUIG. That's been known for a few years.

Indeed, you should be happy to be here!! I'm saying that as someone who is now in my 8th (yes that's one bigger than 7) year here. I did my undergrad here and I'm finishing my postgrad. I have spent a year of that and some shorter trips in the USA though. I have seen a lot of the campuses around Ireland and the US and we don't do too bad here. The campus is compact in comparison to most (eg UCD or most American colleges) and it's in a lovely setting: not too urban while being close to the city!

Old computers: These have been upgraded over the years. The last refit was only a couple of years ago. Most students have laptops or access to a laptop now. I think most of the "campus" accommodation has BB? The computers in the suites are more than adequate!

Over-filled lecture halls: The university buildings that are used most for lectures have been around since Adam was a boy. In those days, there weren't as many people attending and the lecture halls were "too big". I know that's no excuse, but measures have slowly been out in place to try and get around this. For instance, putting on two lectures at the same time in different venues and splitting the class in half. This introduces problems from an operational point of view for the departments who implement it, believe me!

No parking: I already mentioned that there won't be more spaces, but it shouldn't really be that much of a problem. I was in UCD last week for a meeting and you couldn't find a space for love nor money. UCC disavows any knowledge of the existence of motorised vehicles! We're not doing too badly here. When I came here first in 2000, nobody had cars. I knew one student who owned one and that was because his Dad was one of the top ten richest men in Ireland or something. He only used it to drive home the odd weekend. Even when I finished my degree in 2004, very few students had cars! Parking has only become a real issue in the last couple of years although there are relatively close to the same number of students/staff attending. While I was doing my UG, the whole argument was that there weren't enough places to lock your bike! I rarely see bikes around campus now. People drive when they don't need to. I'm not a hippy. I drive to college my self, but I now live out past Claregalway. When I lived within walking distance of the college, I walked with everyone else. When I lived farther away, I cycled with everyone else. Things have just changed very quickly and it's difficult for a university, built over 150 years ago, to keep up!

Overall, you attend a great university in one of the happiest places in the world!

    Wet-Paint,
Planning permission was applied for in June
    http://gis.galwaycity.ie/ePlan/InternetEnquiry/rpt_ViewApplicDetails.asp?validFileNum=1&app_num_file=07475

and granted this week with 500 spaces
    http://www.galwaynews.ie/3121-nui-galway-gets-go-ahead-park-039n039-ride

Personally I think the college should charge students for parking like they do in UL, suddenly you'd find there would not be a parking issue at all and more bus services would pop up once private operators realised it would be viable to do so.

As for the car park, i just read up on the proposal, student and staff parking! I hate this! Staff get staff parking, but they also get student parking too! Theres an insane amount of parking for staff to student ratio, now they get to take our sucky new parking too.

Id also like to see an introduction of parking anywhere past a certain hour. After 6 Pm you can basically park anywhere but, theres always parking at 6pm anyways. Perhaps if at 5pm students could park in staff parking places. How many staff stay in past 5 pm anyways, plenty of students do it, for study and what not. Tennis courts will probably still be full at 5, but the surrounding staff parking will more then likely have a few spaces going.
I know itd be hard to implement with the whole, how would you control students from not parking in staff places at 4.30 and risking it etc. And considering im just after parking in the tennis courts and just like the start of this college year, people are parking along the back fence and not getting clamped. (or not yet anyways)

I know i'm probably going to get slated for saying this but the whole student parking thing really shouldn't be an issue, the vast majority of students that i know don't actually "need" a car, in my view the only students that actually need student parking are those that commute (from outside Galway city) to and from college every day, as for the rest they should walk or cycle like the rest of us. I have absolutely no sympathy for someone living in gort na coiribe, newcastle, westside etc. who drvies into college and complains about not being able to find a space, in most cases they spend so long looking for space/stuck in traffic that it would have been quicker to walk in the first place. As for the weather argument, buy some waterproof gear, its alot cheaper than a car!

It takes me 20 ->25 mins to walk to college (defo nuns island) from my house. Its 10 ->15 mins if i drive. I get more sleep, I arrive dry and not tired from the big walk. I know ive been complaining about the whole parking issue, but its more the lack of replacment parking im annoyed about.
Im also spending 25euro less a week in rent then yourself, on a bigger, double en suite room with NTL included. And the lads who live near me and cycle to college, dont appear too regularly in college on those wet days (galway has lots of these).

Ill be walking next year if i have my way with a good located house though. Anyone leaving there nicely located house this summer you know where to find me. :pac:....

In fairness pretty much all of the concourse building is science. It's offical name is the Arts/Science block but only the Geography Dept. are from Arts, all the rest are science - Physics, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology. Okay we've also got careers and comp services in there but they take up relatively little space
