Is it okay to ask for job description?

    I have an interview on Wednesday, doing the same job I do now (which I love) in a different company. I got the interview through a friend of mine who recently started in that company, so there was no job ad or anything like for it - he just told his manager I was interested in moving there, and then she asked him to pass on her details for me to get in touch, I emailed her my CV and she called me for interview this week... What I'm wondering is, are job descriptions usually confidential or anything, or would it be appropriate for me to ask her for one? I'm planning on emailing her this afternoon just to confirm the interview, and as there is no job ad to go by, it would be nice to have some idea of the job description going into the interview - it should be pretty similar to my current one but would be nice to see if there are any differences... Is it okay to ask for one??

    It is absolutely fine to ask for a job spec. That way you can research as required and also shows the company that you sre serious about joining them.

    Cool thanks, I figured it would be okay but just don't want to be too cheeky - I'm really keen on moving to this company so am being ultra-careful about all my contact with them so far!

    Yes of course, sometimes its a more complicated issue however. This is more aimed at graduated than the OP. Sometimes for graduate positions the company you are going into wont have decided exactly what postion you are going in to so the job desctiptions will be very broad in order to allow them to change it according to their needs. This is espically true of consultancies due to the nature of their business.

    one word, yes.

    More words, would you apply for a position that just offered a "Job on offer, send cv to bla@bla.com"? No, didnt think so. well the same applies, even if they give you only a tiny nugget of info. If you apply for a job that states "IT Position" for example, you can be sure you will be doing something very low level and be a nothing more than a gofer. Only apply to a job where you have defined duties, that way you know what you should do, what you shouldnt and then you wont get shafted into doing more work than you should be doing or taking on other peoples responsibilities without knowing it.

    also, recruiters often make up roles just to harvest CV's. if they wont give you much information, your better off leaving them to it.
