I have 3 IDE drives and ive been thinking about getting one of these SATA drives since there better and faster etc. However i hear bad things like getting them to install work etc with windows. Also the installation seems to be trickier compared to IDE drives when i look in the motherboard manual etc i see mentions of making a floppy disk etc.

So what do i need to know? Is it easy to set up etc? ive put off getting a SATA drives for a few years because most forum posts i read are all about Xyz problem with them.

Do i need to have my Floppy disk drive working to be able to install a SATA hard drive? as atm i havnt connected it heck im not sure it even works.

You should be alright, in order for windows to install on one it may be neccesary to use a driver from floppy or in most cases you can change in the bios to make sata detect as legacy IDE for compatability, I've never had an issiue installing xp on 2 different motherboards on sata drives, if there is a issiue, look in bios for a legacy setting for sata, should be one ;)

If you are installing a SATA drive as a secondary drive then you only need to save the SATA Controller drivers to any location on your PC (other than on a HD you are going to remove , of course) . you could just instal the drivers direct from the download location but it is probably wise to save them and back them up to a USB key or CD or whatever in case you plan to use a SATA as your primary drive in the future .
Other than that SATA drives are a lot simpler to instal than IDE drives as there is no jumper configuration or cable location to worry about .

N.B. Make sure your mobo has SATA onboard before you rush out and buy a drive !
