If your talking about board games I'd say its the Oriental game known in the West as 'Go'.

If your interested you can cut your teeth here:

Think you need to refine your options here.

Board game? As Fursey sais Go is apparently brillant

PC/Console games? Does Company of Heroes count, thought it was a FPS. Civilistion is always good. Lots of ppl like Warcraft,Supreme Commander,Galactic Civ. I loved the UFO series (most recent being Extraterrestrials)I assume its classes as a Strategy game. I think M:TW is great and has huge replayability. But my heart belongs to Starcraft,it just seemed nicely balanced and among my circle we were all at the same level so games were tightly contested.

Company of Heroes as a one off game and for online but I really get a lot of hours from the Total War Series .

total war is probably the most "strategic" game you can ever find, nothing compares when doing stategy, its so realistic with everything, its a shame its enver really kicked off.

As regards social rts id say warcraft 3 is up there, apart from starcraft there is not another rts that has held such a high stake in competitive and social gaming around the world.

There is a good reason why most rts like command anc conquer are played casually and not competitevly.

A game that has alot of downtime with building and camping in bases wont be a successful rts, even if its plays nice ( dawn of war, c&c)

formula for a good rts is constant thinking and moving.

You just have to play a good bit of warcraft3 and youll find your never having any downtime, constantly doing something, go back to your c&c and like me you will find it very boring...

    Warcraft III.

I love Total War, lost many hours to it, but definitely the game that amazed me most had to be Soldiers: Heroes of WW2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭koHd

The Cililization series for me, without a doubt.

While I play RTS's, I find TBS's are much more of a thinking mans game.

The 2 i played the most where CnC Red Alrt 1 and Armada 1, armada 1 i loved for the modding so easy :) But i do love the first cnc game, ground breaking just like TA

Total Annihilation blew me away...Civilisation III also cost me many hours along with Age of Empires.

Going to have to say Shogun though - no such thing as just chucking numbers in and hoping for the best and battles can turn in an instant. Great fun, good campaign and enjoyable multiplayer to boot.

    🤪

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 Fursey

    Shogun was great fun allright.

C&C the original was a true classic that kept me awake many a night into the early hours.

My favorite PC strategy game is The Operational Art of War.

If your into military history, online gaming and strategy then its the one to have.

I want to say starcraft, but I know I will have to come back here in a few months and change it to starcraft 2 :p

    But really;

    1. Starcraft
    2. Medival: Total War (purely because it had multiplayer over Rome and I havent played 2 yet)
    3. Company of Heroes
    4. Total Annihalation/Supreme Commander
    5. World in Conflict
    6. Warcraft 3
    7. Red Alert 2
    8. Dune 2 (the original and the best RTS but mucho dated now)
    9. Civilisation 3 (loses alot of points for a major lack of REAL-TIME :p)
    10. Dawn of War (when it is at least somewhat balanced i.e. every other week)

Please put your counter-opinions and derogatory comments on a postcard and mail it to someone that cares. This is THE list :p

    Warcraft III
    Age of Empires 1 & 2
    Populous

I would like to add Dungeon Keeper to my list - Just as it was so addictive, fun, different and had a twisted sense of humour :)

Well first of all i have to settle this:
total war is probably the most "strategic" game you can ever find
    This kids is complete b****cks
Company of heroes gives u way more control over your squads thus it being more strategic than Rome ever was (Despite this critcism i have played and conqured this game with much enjoyment)
It is clear that company of heroes comes in first followed closely by zero hour
Despite its many criticisms i think that zero hour is the best out of the C&C series
My third option would be WiC purley because of its historical story line and secondly because of its graphics

Starcraft would have to be number one, but red alert and red alert 2 come close

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Company of Heroes and World in conflict tie for first place for me closely followed by Warcraft3 and the C&C red alert series.
I didnt realise red alert 3 was coming until i saw this http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=184228

Thats for Real Time Tactics, which are sold as RTS's these days, Company of Heroes has little to do with strategy and is mostly a battle of tactics. The most strategic RTS game is definately SupCom/Total Annihiliation, no RTS can even come close to the control of armies and strategies.

    My favourite RTS's would be:
    Total Annihilation/SupCom
    Starcraft
    Rome Total Wal

But the 'greatest' (in an importance to the genre) would probably look something like:
C&C/Red Alert, the first ones only, for bringing the genre to the masses.
Starcraft, for redefining e-sports and a benchmark in game balance.
Total Annihilation, a scale far beyond what anyone every imagined in the day and advanced the genre's scope signifcantly.
Shogun Total War, for taking what started in TA to the next level.
Civilisation, for reinventing the turn based strategy.

total war was the only game where surroundings and terrain played a massive part.

in the roman series, roman legions always setup so that their weakest cohort was on the left, which this game accuratly displays.

You could move your army parrallell to a river or mountain to give extra protection to that weak cohort, stop flanking etc..

its the most in depth real strategic experience with the smarties enemies ive ever encountered.

although company of heros is a good game, it doesnt take a genius to just launch wave after wave of enemies while you defend a town square....

thie biggest wow moment i had in gaming was when my roman army was flanking a rival roman army to the right, and the enemy "AI" general ordered his units to focus their attack on my weak left flank, after shattering the cohort into dissarray he performed his own flanking manouvre and completely surrounded me and destroyed me

id say youd get 1/1000 human player that would do that

First total war game i played was rome and the singleplayer compaign amazed me, like playing civ except i could go into every single battle and that made each battle that much more intense and important to win.

Didn't really play company of heroes because it seemed just like dawn of war(which is a good one) with WW2, id say im wrong though.

Love the starcraft and TA and a bit of warcraft 3 multi and single.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

The fact still lies that company of heroes is the best strat. game on the shelves at the moment and those who think other wise just havent given the game a chance and on that note i would like to add that Generals and zero hour kicks C&C 3's ass any day of the week due to its superior gameplay and graphics
In saying that, i have nothing against the earlier titles (and their storylines were second to none)

    The best strategy game, hmmmm

    1. Combat Mission - Beyond Overlord
    2. Close Combat - A Bridge too far
    3. Medieval - Total War

The likes of the Age of Empires series, Warcraft, Company of Heros, Dawn of War, C&C etc are good games as well, but are more about speed of build orders than strategy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

Well i think that i have presented good reasons as to why i think that CoH is the best strat. game. But u all are entitled to an opinion seeing this is a democracy. On a lighter note , has anyone got soulstorm

I don't think warcraft is about speed of build at all, it's what you do with your heroes and units while you build. There is no way you can just build stuff fast and win.
    Meh.

On Warcraft3 I'd agree, hero use and items are more important than build order, but for the rest of the games listed, build orders and mass units are really key to winning.

Yup, you also have to constantly change units to combat whatever the other guy is doing. Can't move back to a 'mass' rts after that, they just become boring.

Have ye ever heard of The Halo Strat game for pc or is it just vaporware

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 901 ✭✭✭EL_Loco

anyone remember "empire"? might have been a commodore64 game, maybe the amiga. Noteworthy to me anyway as it had a disclaimer about addicition in the manual. I mean, how could a computer game be additive I thought at the time. How i've learned ;)

Powermonger I liked too on the amiga.

only recent rts i've played is warcraft3, liked it alot.

I'll have to try out some of these newer ones, seems it's still a popular genre.

Thats a common misconception among people who suck at these types of games. No offense intended, but either you, your opponents or both, need to be properly schooled in the arts of RTS games.

Starcraft for example, a single marine can win a fight in the first 6 minutes or turn a fight 1 hour and 6 minutes into the fight, assuming a decent and equal skill level.

    Diplomacy - Gibson Brothers.

Well I'd say the global opinon would favour Starcraft, but as I have not really played it I can't comment.

My top 3 RTS would be Shogun Total War, Company of Heroes and Total Annihilation.

The Total War series has suffered because the game really has not moved foward too much and its a feeling of Deju Vu I get playing latter installements. The A.I is pretty doogey at time. But Shogun at the time was awesome. I could not get enough of it.

Company of Heroes and particularly its expansion are deeply deeply flawed games but the core gameplay is so fantastic it survives problems that would kill most other RTS. Its more tactical than strategic , more micro than macro. There is no grand strategy its thinking on the fly.
Single player wise the game is solid. Mutiplayer wise is where the game truely shines. Problem is the online server system, balance, (current lack of arranged team games) and too few good maps. Hopefully with the patch due on the 18th first three problems will be addressed to a good extent.

I'm actually a huge fan of the e-sports of Starcraft in Korea, and watch most of the major tournaments (MSL, OSL, BWI, Gom TV Star Invitational etc), and yes micro has a major impact at a high skill level, however it only comes into play at a hugely high skill level where APM's are so insane and game knowledge is so indepth that players can basically run their entire base at full efficiency (far higher than most players) and only use up about 20% of their screen time, if you ever watch an FPVOD of the likes of saviour or Jaedong, in the late game he very rarely even looks at hus base but manages to fill his 200/200 pop cap almost constantly with a never ending stream of units, especially in ZvT matchups.

    However:
At a standard player level, and yes I even mean people who play 20+ games a day, as well as casual gamers, the key focus will always be on the macro (economy, build orders, and army building), and unless the players is either very poor or very new they are very unlikely to gain more by focusing on the micro game as opposed to the macro, and should only put enough time into army control to make sure units areny walked into the enemy base on a move order instead of say attack move.

Ya halo wars is the game i was on about .
What are the problems with Company of heroes ye are talkin about because i have never had any problems bar the odd "cannot connect to all player" and what is that about.

By the way , my apologys for dising Rome Total War the other day , it must be the leaving cert creeping up on me

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

Well the problems with COH go like this. Even with all the complaints I'm about to list I'm not documenting them all. And I'll point out I still very much like the game because the core gameplay is so good.

Since the release of vinalla COH the mutiplayer side of the game has been riddled with bugs, exploits and imbalance.

For example most people always regarded the allied side as overpowered to the axis side right up till the last patch of vinalla COH 1.71 where it was considered almost balanced with a slight favour to the allied side (excluding the infamous axis Piospam uber imbalance). Imbalances included Riflespam with bars, allied resupply drop, sherman crocodile (a.k.a napalm nascar) allied war machine(a.k.a. zombie tanks) and loaded halftracks immune to mines. (note not all of the imbalances where on the same patch at the same time)

Bugs in original game at various stages include. Panzershrecks hits not registering on enemy tanks 60% of the time. Sherman smoke meant sherman tanks where hit by only 1 shot in 5 but the bug was it maintained perfect accuracy firing out of the smoke. German nebelwerfer and mortors bugged to do only half damage to enemy. Panzer IV was unable to hit anything while moving.

There was several units that where never used such as anything in the german tier 4. Each side has 3 doctrines but only 2 allied(airborne and armour) and 1 axis(blitzkreig) where viable.
Drop hacking was rapant in vanilla COH.

You can't fault Relics amount of patches but the patches always break something as well as fix and miss well documented issues.

Then came Opposing Fronts. It went gold while the beta was still on and it was in a very sorry state. Drop hacking presists on a smaller scale. Arranged team games where not introduced. The online stats don't work and the server crashes more and more frequently. System requirements went way up with little graphical improvements. Weather effects do not affect gameplay, which was a feature that was promised. Balanced has got worse with the new factions overpowering old ones. Vehicle AI is poorer than vanilla. Too few good 1v1 map exist still. The infantry combat system was changed ruinng the much like mechanics of infantry combat (its been changed back) The game has degenerated into whats known as blobbing. Each side now spams one uber unit. With Brits its the Commandos who are insanely overpowered. These guys can kill anything extremely quick and are incredible tough. They can tank on at least 3 regular infantry units single handly and win. But they don't have to kill anyone normally as the glider they come in on them usually crushes everyone anyway. These units can by pass MGS with smoke and nade them not to mention appear anywhere on the map. As well as that they can demo buildings. The Panzer Elite just go for Fallshimjaeger and ungrade them to FG42's and they then become damn near unstoppable. Americans have uber Rangers with heroic armour and Thompsons backed up with instant kill off map artillery while whermacht spams high vetrancy grenadiers until the free king tiger shows up. Bugs in Opposing Fronts inlcude automatic super snipers, barb wire AI not working, medic bunkers not working etc. Still many units are idle and not viable.

All in all its still a good game despite this long and very incomplete list and the next patch out on the 18th shows great promise as I have played it in beta and its a good step foward in terms of balance anyway and it will introduce arranged team games and relic promises a much more reliable server.

Enough ranting I'm going back to play it again :)

Company of Heroes I'd say because it's the strategy game I have had the most fun playing online.

Aside from Online? Rise Of Nations for sure. Medieval: Total War is definitely up there with Rise of Nations too.

Blitzkrieg is not as strategic as CoH but still a good game I wouldnt say its that hard but i am a huge fan of WW2 strat games

It is hard a bit too hard but I got the 3 games pack for 15 euro so no complaints!

Playing Rome: Total War as the Julii family in 270 BC and so far so good. Small enough to be managable unlike say playing the Eastern Roman Empire in BI in 363 AD as things start to fall apart.
