My sisters old laptops harddrive has completely died and I need to replace it asap:

    1) Will any 2.5" harddrive work(I have the adapter for the laptop)
    2) Will a larger capacity one with 8mb cache and 5400 rpm work?

It's a IBM travelstar 10gig with 2meg cache and 4200rpm, I dont know what make the laptop is other than a dell latitude with a p3.

Any regular 5400rpm 2.5" inch drive should work fine , however due to the age of the laptop I wouldn't risk installing a drive larger than say 80GB incase the onboard IDE controller of the laptop can't handle larger size drives that have been made more recently.

    Hi All

Like Tragedy, I need to replace the hard drive of an oldish dell (latitude d600).

    LATITUDE D600 PENTIUM M1.5GHZ
    30GB (5, 400 RPM) 9.5MM IDE HARD DRIVE

Would I have to get something like below...

    http://elara.ie/products/detailsfull.asp?productcode=MMEM150527

or would another drive work with an adaptor? If yeah, anyone got a link to relevant adaptor?

    Ta

Bush Doctor, you should be safe enough buying a regular (cheaper than the one you linked to) 80gb PATA IDE Hard Drive. Like the Ones on komplett found here
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.aspx?mfr=&bn=10094&sortBy=p&minprice=&maxPrice=&zbo2=false

Bush Doctor, just realised that their mostly out of stock (see my other thread just posted on IDE Hard Drives) You could also try www.dabs.ie for similar hard drives or wait it out for a day or two and see do komplett get more sotck in.

One other thing to add. Many of the older Dell's have BIOS updates available to provide support for larger capacity drives.
