OSX licence question

The oul fella bought a Macbook the other day (from a bricks and mortar store) - it was supposed to be brand new, but when he got it home and booted it up, it had all sorts of crap on it (user accounts, tonnes of music etc.). Obviously it was a return or demo or something.

Anyhow, he brought it back and they replaced it with a new one no bother, BUT, because he was on the motorbike, he just brought the actual laptop back, and not the box/charger/manuals etc.

So the OS discs he has are actually off the first (used) machine. I know/think windows reboot discs are tied to the orignal machine, is this the case with macs?

i.e. Should he go back in tomorrow and swap the OS discs for the right ones?

I'm open to correction but I think Mac OS disks are interchangeable.

Thats some pretty shítty service from the shop though!

You'll be fine. There are no CD keys or anything like that with OS X.

Yeah, the only explanation he got was 'Oops, that machine should never have gone out' or something. I reckon they saw him coming tbh ;) It was on sale so no harm done.

Cheers for the replies and info guys.

Yup the discs will be fine. The OS discs are only every tied to particular machine types eg you cannot use a MacBook disc on an MBP, unless you have an universal install disc etc etc

Actually the correct answer here is that if he replaced it for the same rev macbook then he is fine. But if it was the last rev of the macbook he got first then the old disks will not work in the newer macbook. The discs are not hardware specific.

This is the way it works for the OS. You need the OS that came with it or a version that was released on newer hardware. But what you can do is put the machine into target disk mode and install the OS. Then install all the updates on it and then it will work fine. Of course you need to be booted from an older mac to do this.
