    Hey folks,

What do ye think would be considered the most "epic" songs of all time? Not sure how one would define it :D But I'm talking about the likes of:

    Bohemian Rhapsody
    Stairway to Heaven
    Like A Rolling Stone
    Freebird

Those kind of songs :) Any that come to mind?

Nightwish have loads of epics - The Poet and the Pendulum, Beauty of the Beast, Ghost Love Score, Creek Mary's Blood. Epica have The Divine Conspiracy, Consign to Oblivion and the Phantom Agony. Also After Forever's Dreamflight, Led Zeppelin's Kashmir and almost everything by Globus.

Ha ha definitely! What a song though. It has everything from a whistle intro to a soaring guitar solo. Just perfect! Now where's my iPod?

Citizen Erased by Muse. Goes through so many phases and moods that its hard to categorise, but always makes the hairs stand up on my neck.

    'Lose yourself'

That is the definition of epic.

The start of the second verse is *can't describe the emotion''

Then when he starts talking about a struggle for food stamps..pretty damn epic. Sort of just shows the line between success and failure.

couldnt help myself from posting here..wanted to simply name one "epic" song but couldnt come down on either side of 2 Neil Young epics..so putting them both down..

    'Like A Hurricane'
    &
    'Cortez the Killer'

    MacArthur Park by Richard Harris.
Whats more epic than a wet cake?

And Riders on the storm / When the music is over by the doors, if not already mentioned.

In da gadda da vida by I. Ron Butterfly.

Dont fear the reaper is pretty epic. That whole murder suicide jam. And the really scary screechy solo.

I'm wondering on what basis people here call songs epic? I'm looking at some of the replies, and I think to myself, that's epic? Not a criticism, but honestly wondering what aspects make it epic, a little elaboration would help.

For me, it doesn't get much more Epic that Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness, it's a single song that's just over one hour in lenth, which builds such an incredible soundscape from a progressive rock foundation, with choirs and strings that fill out the sound. The use of a children's choir is something special as well, so it's quite a unique sound, but it all comes together to form such an incredible epic song. Absolutely breath-taking.

A completely different kind of epic :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

Some good epic tunes would be:
"Shine on you crazy diamond" by Pink Floyd
    "The End" by the Doors
    "Reflection" by Tool
the whole "The Orb's Adventures beyond the Ultraworld" album by the Orb

But this number by John Cage really takes the biscuit!

Epic defined by MSN Encarta as ''impressive by virtue of greatness of size, scope, or heroism''

This leaves me none the wiser as to what truly is a song of epic proportions.

Elton John's song from the Lion King?

    ROFL he's back!

Anyway, most of Metallica's S&M album could be considered epic what with the orchestra and everything.

    Dunno if they're epic but:

    Mazzy Star- Fade into You
GNR- Don't Cry, Sweet Child O' Mine, November Rain
    Manic Street Preachers- Motorcycle Emptiness
U2- songs like Bad, New years Day, Ultraviolet (Light my way) etc etc
    Pearl Jam- Black
    RHCP- Under the Bridge
Radiohead- Street Spirit, Fake Plastic Trees etc etc

Ah i dunno maybe they're not epic but they're good atleast...
What the fcuk is epic anyway? :)

My definition would be something that is over 6 minutes and has
different sections building to a big Finale. Oh yeah and good too:D

the best examples are probably Stairway to Heaven and
Bohemian Rhapsody mentioned at the start

    Yes/No:confused:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,478 ✭✭✭Bubs101

All Around the World - Oasis
    Spiders (kidsmoke) - Wilco
    Always - Bon Jovi
    Rapper's Delight - Sugarhill Gang
White Line ( DOn't Push it) - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,148 ✭✭✭damonjewel

All the following are pretty epic, but perhaps too epic to be a single release

    Autobahn - Kraftwerk
    Hallelujah - Can
    Do Right - Can
Court of the crimson king - King Crimson
    Suppers Ready - Genesis
Return of the giant hogweed - Genesis
Careful with that axe Eugene - Pink Floyd

    and

Won't get fooled again by the Who

Bon Jovi has no place here, or anywhere. I would only rank that song with
    No Matter What - Boyzone
    It's about as epic

    Achilles last stand
    The song remains the same
    Stairway
    Since Ive been loving you
    Dazed and Confused
    Kashmir

    Etcetcetcetc.....

Come on people, why has no one mention Pete Frampton?

'Do You Feel Like We Do', an epic if ever there was one!

But for the greatest epic of them all...............................

Orbital 'Lush 3-1, Lush 3-2, Impact (The Earth Is Burning)' and 'Remind' all blend seamlessly into the mother of all tunes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭IanCurtis

    Radiohead - "Paranoid Android"
    Suede - "The Asphalt World"

Joy Division - "Candidate" or "Dead Souls"

    not that I'm biased

Wow, 'Epic' is really a 70s rock thing isn't it?

Except for, of course Dexys Midnight Runners' "This is what she's like"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,005 ✭✭✭Creature

Layla - Not that pansy 2 minute version though ;)
    Smoke on The Water
    Sunshine of Your Love
    For Those About To Rock...

There's many more. Pretty much most of the big songs by the popular 'classic' rock bands.

Strings don't make an epic... and in S&Ms case they just make it laughable.

More of a good song with a killer jam at the end rather than what would be considered 'epic' for me....

They do for the likes of November Rain. Strings + soaring guitar.

What do you feel makes an epic song then seeing as you didn't offer an alternative?

Judging by the posts here, my idea of an 'epic' song is completely different that most peoples. That or people are just naming their favourite songs for the sake of it.
