This is a laptop, right? Why do you suspect it to be an IR issue?

Its a desktop.

When I said "IR" I meant Industrial Relations (maybe the cd player is on stirke).
I forgot about Infra Red, oops :eek:

Drive doesn't show up at all. I tried to get some files from it over the weekend via a memory stick but it seems the usb ports are now not working. Looks like a new pc is required!!

I've seen viruses do stuff like this (one from MSN recently iirc), have you run a virus scan? It should be possible to boot into safe mode and run a full scan using the keyboard for navigation
