    yes :)
It has the scenery, beaches and all the good shops etc.
It has the feel of a community but isn't some rural backward place nor is it overwhelming and lonely like Dublin can be!

i like sligo, hence i'm still here 2 years after i was meant to leave. but for teenagers it must be awful, nothing to do and i feel it shows in the way the majority of them act.

Just like Yeats, I am a Dub with a fondness of Sligo.;)

Its a great area, love going there. The town can be a bit rough like any town. Bit of a littering problem. Otherwise I find Sligo friendly and pleasant.

I havent come across any of localism in surfing, nothing like Kerry or Cork. Even on secret breaks.

I wouldn't live anywhere I didn't like, so yes! Personally speaking though, the town is really ugly. If I'd the choice, I'd level it & rebuild from scratch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,125 ✭✭✭lightening

I'd level it & rebuild from scratch.

It could do with a good revamp, Its no uglier than a lot of other towns (Tuam).... Athlone looks great lately, Sligo could do with a bit of that. The river is a huge huge advantage.

I agree totally. O'Connell St is a mess, Harmony Hill looks desperate, Castle Street isn't too bad, but would be a lot better if it was pedestrianized & the river IS amazing, but really isn't exploited enough as a focal point.

You've got two nightclubs facing onto it that only open a couple of nights a week, lots of offices, a car park and only 2 bars that make any effort to exploit the views ie., The Glasshouse & The Left Bank (which has been sitting idle for about a year now).

It's horrible that the main hub of the town in the daytime is the sprawling Tescos car park as the shops are all within easy reach.

Check out Athlone, they turned the town around to face the Shannon. Ireland has a tradition of backing buildings on to river instead of facing them. We need to utilise our towns natural beauties. Even Dublin is blocked off from its bay by monster bridges and railway lines.

    Pffft!

I don't really think it looks bad. Rockwood Parade is gorgeous in the summer. Wonder if the left bank will be open for the summer. Would be strange not seeing a crowd outside there in the summer!

I always think it's comical walk out of Quayside onto Wine St! Does anyone else laugh at that? :D

Sligo town has alot of potential. Its so beautiful coming into it with the backdrop of Benbulbin. The small streets arent designed for cars. Is nice that they are looking towards revitalising it.
The countryside and beaches have always been class. Some of it has been plighted by reckless developemnt.:(
Lets hope that people are more willing to protect it in future.:)

    <SNIP>

    WTF???

The crowd outside the Leftbank are respectable!

The wino's have always been there, further down long before that area was ever developed!

No i meant that it is a good thing! Its part of the old town and gives it character. Thats why the pedestrianisation of O Connell Street is a nice idea. (if they'd finish it off) I love harmony hill and Old market street (or high street) and castle street too. The smaller network of streets and hilly aspect is attractive. Thats what is quaint and i suppose exploited more in galway. The potential of the river is beginning to be explored and if they had more markets/buskers/street carnival type things, twould really be cool. :)

    POST DELETED

I've never seen any trouble outside the left bank tbh. Nor have I ever seen any of the "wino's" causing any trouble and it's never bothered me to have them drinking across from there. I've never seen any kids drinking there during the summer, They hang out there yes probably because it's along the river and is a nice spot. Deal with it!

Where's the "I haven't made up my mind yet" option?

Honestly, the town isn't bad. Some of the people are w*nktastic (based on serious incidents happening) but most are nice enough. There's not a whole lot to do, but it's a small town so I expected that.

My biggest problem is the lack of opportunities. I've been out of work here for two and a half months and I'm getting freakin' sick of it, man. We'll probably have to move elsewhere just so I can get work and at that point my CV will be like swiss cheese so I'm going to look like a bum with no initiative.

    soooooo other than the bitterness....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 962 ✭✭✭devil-80

Minus of the town-not too much bins in city centre, too much rubbish in area and like wrote Xiney"lack of opportunities".
    But my answer is YES.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 Red Rev

Yes its got character, which so many towns miss.
Still a good community town, but not like one of those one horse towns.

Counting the days 'til I leave.

Nothing for me to do here 'cept Rovers and the cinema. Depressing stuff.

I did but now I am disillusioned by the dishonesty of the country people.

I wish I had stayed abroad.

Dare I suggest you try to broaden (sp?) your horizons!
Chances are you'll hvae the same complaint where ever you go.

Talk up surfing or fishing, hiking, camping, a sport etc.

Hard to know what exactly your looking for!!

I'm a Sligonian who now lives in the UK but I keep in touch with home via family and reading the weekender online and boards.ie:) (Anyone know why The Champion hasn't being updated online in ages?)
Anyway I've just returned from a long weekend in Sligo and have a few observations that I thought I'd share! In general, re. the thread title, I do like SLigo, particularly the countryside around it (mountains, beaches, lakes etc) but I feel the town/city has been "let go".
-O'Connell St - how hard can it be to just get on with re-paving this street. At the moment it's a mess and feels like a half-arsed attempt at a pedestrianised street. Also, this applies throughout the town, I think a lot of the shop fronts are in a fairly shabby state. I don't want to single any out BUT as an example, next time you're on O'Connell St have a look at the Body Shop - the paint is falling/scraped off, there's graffiti on it and it just looks grubby - every other Body Shop I've ever seen looks pretty good so why does Sligo's one look so bad? This is just an example of how bad I think the town in general looks. Castle St. also is in terrible condition but I realise there are a couple of new developments in the pipeline here.
Also, the approach to Sligo from the Manorhamilton side is a disaster - you are met by a road block that directs you up the overgrown side-road/building site that is Connaughtan Road. The Mall was once a thriving busy street but is now like no mans land. Surely making The Mall one-way for cars going towards the city centre would make sense and bring a bit of life back to the street. Anyway, I have lots of other points but I risk coming across as a bore so i'll shut up now! In general my wife and I (who's not from Sligo) had a nice time there - some good grub in The Glasshouse and Tobergal Lane Cafe - so hopefully if the Corpo and local businesses get their act together then things will start to improve

Sligo as a town is OK I suppose but its public figures leave a lot to be desired. Can anyone remember a programme called 'Halls Pictorial Weekly' that used to be on RTE in the seventies and in particular 'The Ballymagash Urban Dstrict Council' ? Disturbing when you compare them eh?

    I don't! Do tell please!

Ballymagash Urban District Council comprised of a bunch of self important egotistical parochial morons concerned only for the parish pump issues of the day. Every time I listen to some of our local public reps on Ocean FM arguing and fighting with each other, they remind me of these guys.
The worry is though that Ballymagash was comedy, Our Council and corpo are for real!!!!

The first time I heard Ocean FM when I moved to Sligo, I actually though it was a parody. No kiddin - I was laughing thru the death notices until my girlfriend told me that it wasn't supposed to be funny.
