Can somebody please explain what Online Check In is and what it entails. I am a bit confused by the whole thing.

Well, with Aer Lingus, you can check in online 30hrs before departure.

You can then choose to print your own boarding pass, or just collect one from a kiosk at the airport. You can also usually choose your seat when checking in too. If you have baggage then drop it off at a drop-off desk, otherwise just head straight through to security.

Ryanair is a different kettle of fish i think.

you can check in 48 hrs and up uo 4 hrs before your flight afaik.
You put in your passport number date of birth and then you print off your boarding card. If you do this you don't have to queue up at the check in desk and can go straight to security. Also ryanair give you priority boarding with this. Only thing is you can only check in online if you don't have any bags to check in. And its cheaper!

    Not entirely acurate.
OLCI varies depending on who you are flying with.
Aer arran is 48hrs ahead of the flight.
Aer Lingus is 30hrs and BA for example is 24hrs.

You can still OLCI if you have baggage for most if not all airlines. You just go to your airlines fast bag drop desk with your baggage to check that in.
There may be a charge for that part depending on who you are flying with.
Theres no charge with iberia or BA for example but there is for Ryan air and EI.

On line check in lets you confirm your seat from the comfort of your own pc at home a day or two before travel and print your boarding pass.It will have a bar code on it that they will need to scan at security.
A lot of the time when you go to the baggage drop, they will reprint a normal boarding card for you.

The best thing about OLCI is it gives you the chance to pick the best seat if it's available.

Ryanair now let you check-in online 5 days before the flight up until 4 hours before hand. If when checking-in for you outbound flight, you return flight is within 5 days you can check-in for that on at the same time.

Ryanair recently changed it to the more sensible charging for checkin at the airport rather than charging you for checking in online and saving their staff work.

I was referring to the baggage charge though, they still charge for that don't they?

Being able to check in for outward and return within 5 days I must admit sounds handy.
I've done that myself for day returns before on EI and BA.
It's usually a blue moon when I'm flying Ryanair so I'm not up to date on their procedures.I prefer the pleasures of being oneworld emerald :)
