    Hi there,
Thinking of buying a new flatscreen and between the sterling rate and other stuff i have decided to go to Belfast to procure it. Problem is i spoke to mrs bluefinger and she reckons that tvs made for the UK market will not work in the Republic. Can anyone please shed some light on this for me please?

If it has a VHF tuner then no problem. If it is for digital TV only, then no problem at all

If your using it for analogue cable tv you would be missing most of the channels. If it for anything else you should be grand

Traditionally TVs sold in the UK only have a UHF tuner, which would be a problem if you're receiving RTE1/2 from a VHF transmitter or have analogue cable.

However, these days most if not all TVs are designed for use across Europe. If you're unsure, consult the specifications in the instruction manual or check the tuning menu on the TV - if there's a country selection that includes Ireland or band selection that goes beyond just UHF (channels 21-69) you'll be grand.

ok. thanks for everything. so...what i'm thinking is that we will be getting the ntl digital in the house and if we do that the tv should work just fine as we won't have an analogue signal. is that right?

That's right. I bought my TV in Europe and never even thought of this. I'm using NTL digital and it works fine.

For NTL Digital it doesn't matter. Some UK TVs don't have Band III/Hyperband. Most European ones do, but they might have no sound (UK & Ireland uses different Analogue sound frequency, PAL - I)
