Alright lads, I know it's a long shot.
I figure that this forum reaches most net people on this island and I'm hoping that someone might know someone that might know of an abandoned delorean stashed away in a farmhouse which the owner might be willing to sell.
I'm looking for a restorable Delorean (doesn't have to be running)maybe 4000-7000 sterling or 6000-9000 euro.
    Any help would be apreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    David

Ah, i remember getting the train past the factory when i was a kid and seeing hundreds of them in the lot with doors open, cool cars !

I met a guy in Phoenix last year, neighbour of my girlfriend who just bought a DeLorean, it was immaculate and had about 25k on the clock. He told me he paid $15,000 for it. ( 7,500 stg !)

I'm not 100% sure about this but i believe that if a product was made in the UK, exported and then at some point re-imported then no duty is payable when re-importing.

I'm into guitars as well and was looking at a British made guitar for sale in the states, this is what the seller told me in relation to shipping the guitar to the UK and given the seller's reputation i was inclined to believe him.

Anyway, you can check it out but if this was the case you could probably import a far better example from the states than you would find here. There is shipping of course but it might be worth looking.

There are 3 on ebay right now and prices seem more than the guy i met said he paid, i remember looking last year though and did see some about the $15k mark. Maybe he just got a great deal or maybe it needed work, didn't look like it to me, anyway.....

Found this guide as well on ebay, looks pretty good,

wonder if they have them for other cars, must check !

A Delorean is my next car and was going to be this one, but I fell for a Mustang so I did a small amount of homework on them: Spend as much money on a Delorean as is humanly possible. Restoration is not an easy or a cheap job, cars that are for restoration tend to need more serious work on them, work that is more involved than a usual restoration. I'd seen cheap D's and the interior needs pulling out, they sit funny on the road, so new suspension parts, the engines are rough, they have many dents or have a small crash (plastic underbody), they don't look good. :(

Good luck, firstly with finding one! I agree with the post above, you will probably have more joy in the States because that's where most of them wound up.

That'll be a tough restro job as well won't it? You can't exactly pop down to Halfords to get the parts!

Be careful about statements from sellers claiming no duties are required if the car was built/manufactured in the UK or any other European Country, as they are not true:

You can reclaim VAT or the cars will considered free off VAT if the car was ever SOLD NEW in any European country, not if they were just built here. The crucial factor is that once a car was ever sold new in a European country, VAT would have applied when the car was sold and therefore there is no need to pay VAT Again, when you import it back into Europe.

However, if the car was built here, shipped out and SOLD NEW in the US, VAT was never paid, so when you import, VAT will have to be paid on the car.

Also, because it's an 81-82 you will also have to pay VRT duties, and all these costs could add up quite expensively....

I can check the European market for you... as at least you won't have to worry about the VAT end of it...

I doubt a resto project would be the thing to try on a DeLorean. Firstly the body is stainless steel, the interior parts are made of unobtainium and the Renault engine could be hard to find used !

I would also actually find one to try and drive. They are very awkward cars to get in and out of if you are any way tall and you'll sweat loads in sunny weather even with a/c.

A guy beside me had one for about a year, I tried it and it felt very clausterphobic !

Don't believe all the bad stories. Parts can be got for them. the mechanicals are easy(Renault, and they made millions of those V6's), its just the body parts that are tricky, but they can be got. Big club in the U.S. and Ireland too. www.delorean.ie
Basically buy the best you can afford. And have fun getting it back on the road!!!!

i think some guy from Texas recently bought up all the available stock of parts etc and is planning to start making them again.

There was a guy who lived up the road from me (Glenageary) from around 96 to 98 who used one as his everyday car. It looked and sounded excellent. I haven't seen it around for years though

Yeah, I recall somebody posting a pic here in the last few years of a De Lorean which was in everyday use and was parked up every day outside an office in the Cornmarket (?) area in Dublin.

Cool using a De Lorean for evrday transport alright!:D

I remember reading an article about the car the above post in a magazine. It was owned by a fruit and veg importer. If i recall correctly his son has it now. (open to correction).

I met someone about 10 years ago in Newmarket on Fergus that had another one. It was on Irish plates and the owner was very friendly.

Clareview motors in Limerick had one on display some time ago as well, that one was on UK plates.

For any delorean heads out there, theres a servicing guide for the DMC-12 in this months(april 08) car mechanics magazine, which is also 50 years old this month, theres a bit of a nostaligia theme in it.

I know I'm digging up an old thread here, but yes they are making them, theres a video on youtube about it.
