Girlfriend Pregnant

I don't even know why I'm posting this but I need to talk to someone.

My girlfriend and I have been together for nearly 5 years. It's a serious relationship, and I can't see myself with anyone else. We recently got a house together as well, plus I recently got promoted as well, so things were going well.

She said she was feeling weird, with some weight gain, which I put down to us being pigs when we were on holidays last month, along with some breast tenderness, which sometimes happens prior to her period. Her period last month was erratic, since she forgot to take the pill for a couple of days. She took a test and it came back positive. We've had one or two 'scares', for lack of a better word, recently so I didn't think much of it, and now I have that test staring at me.

We wanted kids, just not yet, and financially, there shouldn't be any problems. To be honest, my main concern is her Grandfather, who may try to kill me. :)

I don't know what I want from posting here as I'm in shock. She's gone out because she had arranged it prior to this shock, and I'm literally stunned. I can barely think. I don't know what to feel.

Obviously, we're going to have to go to the Doctor during the week, and I'll get her vitamins etc just in case, but from what I googled, false positives on Pregnancy Tests are practically impossible.

I suppose what I'm looking for is advice, tips and a hard drink :)

Ah OP it may not be what you need me to say but CONGRATS!!! Its great news and you are having a baby with the woman you love... A little bit of each of you. Hope you can both get over the shock and enjoy the pregnancy.

She may be more shocked than you and more concerned as its her body who is going to change drastically and there is also the issue fo the labour. On top of that if you are accusatory to her about missing her pill, then she may feel that you think she has trapped you into this... Just be sensitive of her emotions and be as supportive as you can if you both decide to go ahead with the pregnancy.

Your just shocked! Give it a couple of days and it will sink in. You sound like a level headed guy so chill, make no rash decisions and hug GF as much as poss! (Btw - its the best thing EVER, really!)

Congratulations, so you'll have kids a little earlier than you were planning. Hey, you're with the woman you love and you're financially sound. Things are all good. You and your gf should be happy. Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify, I would never accuse her of 'trapping' me, and the issue with the pill didn't come up tonight, nor will it ever come up. As the saying goes, it takes two to tango. If anything, I wanted to have kids sooner than her (She wanted to wait another 6 years, I wanted about 2 or 3) so if anyone gets accused of 'trapping' someone, it'll be me!!!!

I was probably a bit of a gob****e earlier as we literally found out about 45 minutes before she went out, as I was so shocked, but I'll be making up for it when she gets back. I think I just needed to get it out of me, as I doubt we can tell anyone until it's 100% certain and obviously, in the unthinkable event that something may go wrong.

Thanks for listening and the kind replies.

You're naturally feeling a little (or a lot!) shocked at the moment.
This is a big change, and you just have to give it time to sink in.
You clearly love this woman and things are good financially, so give it time for the dust to settle and see how you are then.
+1 on the comment to be supportive to your girlfriend.
She is no doubt in a turmoil right now, and will need you to be there for her EVEN if she doesn't say it!
You may look back and see this moment as one of the best things that ever happened to you.
I hope that you do! :)

You sound like a really decent guy.... Was just worried that if you got a HUGE shock you may have said something to her which made her think that.... Send her a text and tell her you cant wait to see her and she will be so happy coming home to you knowing you are taking it well..

buy her granmother flowers and a big bottle of sherry then get her to drink it, then tell her and if she flips hit her over the head with the bottle

Its time to step up to the plate is all, its gonna be a change in both of your lives and more importantly a beginning of another. Think this is a happy situation, children aren't always born to parents in sound relationships. Best of luck.

To be honest, I'm not sure how she feels. She's as shocked as I am, and as I said, we've not had much time to discuss it. I don't think there will be much sleep tonight (which is precisely the reason we're here, come to think of it.....)

Again, thanks for your replies. They help more than you know.

    - of course you are shocked its kind of a big deal it doenst mean you
    are a bad person
    - imagine how shocked your GF is shes the one that will have to tell
her work about her surprise maternity leave, new responsibility
and will have to carry it but it doesnt mean you arent allowed
    time to adjust
    - have that stiff drink but wait for the excitement to kick in you
are having your first baby with your loving partner and dont
    have any financial worries.

there are many people out there going wow i wish i was him.

if you had run out and bought loads of flowers for when
    she had gotten back

Don't worry about things, all I would do If I were you, was reassure her and tell her what she means to you. Maybe have a pint with your best mates another night to get your own head together, look after her first.

I asked how she felt, because she may not be happy about it. She may feel the time is not right.

I have no idea how she is feeling, she may be secretly thrilled, or happy and aprehensive, or happy but worried what you feel, or unhappy and worry how you feel.

You sound like a wonderfully supportive partner, and I have a feeling you are both going to be happy about this and go on to be great parents. Talk, talk talk.

Hi OP: Let the shock die down a little :D.

i hope you two did get some sleep though. In all honestty, i think when you both get into teh headspace for it you will be grand.
It appears you both have a strong relationship in any event and its just the timing.

    All the best :D
