Well i know you'll probably call me an idiot for this but iv gotta ask
While taking photos off my camera i had it on my bed and my mum called me i ran out to her and came in a few minutes later and the camera was on the floor and my nifty fifty was in two pieces!:mad:Turned out the dog pulled it off!First of all is it repairable what it is is where the lense contacts are connected to the main circuit board has snapped...if its not how will i get it running on my camera as when i use it it comes up with error 01 im guessing this is cos of the contacts not sending any message to the body??(iv tested thisd on my two slr's!)will i have to cover/remove lens contacts??

    thanks all

yeah im gonna have to do that!but my problem is that error 01 keeps appearing when i take a pic which im guessing has something to do with the contacts not sending any message....

Can't offer any help but when I saw the thread title I thought you had decided to upgrade. Sorry to hear of the damage to your camera - do you have any insurance that might cover such damage?

Mine always fell in half and usually just popped back together and worked fine but the AF has finally decided to die, continuously hunts for focus, so its time for it to go to the big Canon farm in the sky and be replaced by a 50mm f1.2 L ... :D

Ricky, i dont really understand your first post, did the lens actually break into 2 pieces?, could you easily reassemble it?, and now is it just the auto focus thats not working?

I'd do the homework on that lad first, gets a lot of bad press, not least focus shifts.

Paddy I would pass up the 50mm f1.2 and go for the 85mm f1.2. Too many bad reports about the 50mm..

Yes it was broke in two.
I looked at the plasic outer casing(still attached to camera)and saw a electrical ribbon lead torn in two.So there is now no electric going to the lense i will post some photo's asap and you can see what i mean but they wont be too good!

only one thing to do in this situation

The dog must die... no seriously I'd put the lens in nice place and get yourself a new one, or here's an idea mess about with the glass and see if you can't make it into something interesting to shoot with bet you could get interesting effects if you had the patience to mess about.

Now would not be the best time to start a flame war about how if it was a Nikon lens then the higher build quality would have left if without a dent...or would it? (You know I'm just kidding!)

I am amazed that you can still take photos with it - wouldn't there be a lot of light leaking in from the sides?

If nothing else those lenses could make for a magnifying glass :)

If the only problem is the broken lead and the lens actually fits back together ok it might be worth taking it to your local Canon service centre see if it can be repaired if not too expensive.

I had the same type of thing happened to my 50mm, thing is I never dropped it or anything but the lebns etc came away from the body and the data cable also snapped.
