does anyone know what would happen if I got bought an iphone in the states, got it jailbreaked and then joined o2 for their 45euro a month plan - would it be possible to get the updates etc and use it without the worry of it getting bricked?

would anyone recommend buying in the states and going through the procedure of unlocking it - i'm not very tecki minded but would give it a try, i know there are loads of tutorials online that i could maybe follow - but i don't want to end up with a useless iphone if it downloads an update - but maybe if i was joined with o2 i'd avoid this problem??

plan is only available to new iPhone customers on an 18 month contract, your only option is a standard O2 plan with a data ad on i think its €15 for 1 gb per month on top of standard contract.

your iphone will always be recognised as coming from a region outside ireland and will never be treated as a legitimate iphone and will always require some kind of activation bypass.

if i buy an iphone in the us and get it unlocked, will i be able to avoid any problems with future software updates - i.e will i be able to decline an update or will it happen automatically? and if i did do a software update will the phone be f**ked or could it be unlocked a second or third time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

you can decline updates, but i think there is a setting in itunes that allows the download and install of firmware updates automatically, you just need to turn that off.

generally yes if you install a new firmware especially through itunes you will lose your unlock.

Sorry to hijack but any1 using an unlocked iPhone on o2 notice that the visual voicemail button now dials 171, where as berfore it just didn't work.

No, I had to program it to do that with a code!

It shouldn't have worked.. how would it have known your voicemail number? Blind luck!?

    so i've popped into the o2 store on Patrick street in cork and asked the guy a question:;

If i buy an iphone in the states - get it unlocked, will i be able to get the updates and subscribe to the regular 02 45euro per month plan from the 14th March without the worry of it getting bricked?? And he says yes - no problem once it's unlocked and you change over to the o2 iphone tarrif you'll be able to get the updates as if you bought it for the 18month contract...

somehow i don't think this is 100% correct information - does anyone have any feedback in it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭GBX

sounds dodgy... probably been told by the mgt to get people signed up to part with the euros and stung on an 18 mt contract when they cant change

as far as i'm aware this is incorrect information that dude gave out

complete BS. you will only be able to use a iPhone that was legally unlocked or else lock your phone again back to factory settings and activate with an O2 sim and pay for the contract.

am fairly certain the answer is no but I'll ask anyway

I know the iphone will work with webmail and smtp/pop3,
but can you get a blackberry client or similar so it will work with an exchange server ?

flatmate got it earlier, its a bit big, plus they messed up and he cant use it untill monday. he's porting from meteor and they messed up the connection so he's just got an expensive mp3 player at the mo!!!!

cheaper than i thought it was gonna be though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

why would anyone buy one in ireland just to port it to meteor, fecking boggles my brain.

the irish ones still have to be jailbroken and unlocked to run a meteor sim just the same as an american one except the american one is 180euro cheaper (16gig).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,632 ✭✭✭SligoBrewer

    He said porting from Meteor.

    Not porting to.

ahhh yes i see that now.

but my point remains the same as in the other thread over on mobiles/pda's people are asking can you walk into o2/carphone warehouse and just buy one off the shelf and then jailbreak and unlock when you get hom.

flash will come in the new update i'm sure about it, as the sdk was released so if apple don't support it i'm sure someone will port a flash enabled browser.

I was just listening to Chicago NPR there and they had an item about iPod related muggings - the little white earbuds and the zoned out wearers being the perfect lightening rod for muggings. Apparantly if you look at crime stats in the U.S. back in 2002 you can see an iCrime effect.

With the official launch of the Phone here this got me wondering how long it will be before someone has their Irish iPhone grabbed or if it has already happened.

    ...

Prices starting at €1,209 is not that cheap in fairness ;)

Plus 15c for voicemail, what is that all about? Who pays for voicemail these days...

But I do want one :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭triple h

lets face it we ( and every person in the world) all want the iPhone. But the price is crazy.
Our only options are A) wait for the price to come down. B) hope Nokia and all the other companies catch up to the iPhone. Or C) just go out and buy it,

    option A is my choice.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭triple h

Even if i won the Lotto tonight i would not buy the iPhone. Not at that price. I would feel like i was after been robbed and then laughed at by the robbers. And that is not right.

    O2 Ireland customers! :p

They are nice, very stylish, I just the the features are compromised compared to say a high end Nokia. And I already have a means of doing everything it can do, albeit on separate devices.

I'll put it this way, if my company were paying for one for me I'd probably pull someone's arm off that's how quickly I'd grab it. As it is, I'm a student - not gonna happen. Hopefully by the time I qualify it'll have bumped up features, cheaper prices and more competition.

    EDIT:

They're well on their way. Have you had a look at the LG Viewty? From what I can see it beats the iPhone hands down except that it has no Wi-Fi. I very nearly bought one on 3 as a replacement for both my phone and ageing camera, but the deal breaker was the fact that it had no optical zoom, so I reckoned a cheaper phone and a good camera were the way to go.

Most enjoyable user experience I have ever had from a gadget!

I am currently using my iphone to navigate and type on my macbook while it is hooked up to the TV at the other side of the room!

With the release of the SDK its just going to get better in my eyes.

But I really dont agree with the bullsh*t data plans and contracts. Take the good with the bad I suppose.

this white earphone thing is so old tbh, nearly every fecking mp3 player comes with white earphones now. white - for some reason - is the new black.

It was for a while, then black became rare because everything was in white, so now black is the new white.

Well there we differ, the iPhone has focussed the media's attention on phone technology in a way that few if any other phones have (whether that level of attention is deserved or not is a different matter - give me an N95 any day) and therefore it is higher in the public conciousness.

When a phone enters popular culture the way the iPhone seems to be doing then I think issues around it such as the possible impact on crime it may have are worth exploring. You may not. However, the thread is not compulsory reading and I think it is pretty clearly labelled so as to be easy to avoid.

Remote Buddy lets you do that for €20. Granted, the virtual keyboard isn't the most user-friendly thing in the world, but add the rather fantastic Apple wireless keyboard for €79 and you're laughing all the way to the bank (where you can lodge the €300-€400 you saved off the cost of an iPhone even before the crazy contract).

Sorry lads, I hate to be iPhone bashing, it is a lovely gadget, but I just can't help feeling that it's a waste of potential and crazy money. If I'm willing to accept the marginal inconvenience of using several other very nice gadgets (iPod, slim camera, MacBook, slim phone etc.) I can do a lot more for a lot less, especially when the contract is taken into account.

Seriously, optical zoom on the LG Viewty and I wouldn't have thought twice. IMO Apple's gonna have their work cut out to attract buyers over the next year or two if this pricing structure is kept and they don't make rapid improvements (yes, I am aware that the network providers set the contract prices).

I won't consider it until there's 3G and won't consider it until they lift the draconian restrictions on VOIP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Anyone else fed up of this "anyone who gets one now is a muppet" lark. Its people's choice. People who buy now are well aware of the rip off, but they either can simply just afford it, or they dont care they are being ripped off. That is their choice. No up to us to judge that decision. If you think you wouldnt buy one due to those reasons, fine, I respect that, but no need to give the people who choose to buy it a hard time, which is all people (in general) seem to be doing since Friday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

Personally I could be the last person to criticise as I'd be amongst the first to buy the thing regardless of cost because I just love gadgets but I'm just a little narked at the COO of the iPhone.

It's not those that buy it I'd point to it's the people selling it and no matter how much I like Apple products I'll freely admit that this is a fly in the ointment, they are laughing at us. Nokia, SE, LG: all the big names wouldn't get the kind of deal from the operators that Apple have, that's what's p1ss1ng most people off I think. Blocking it's sale as a SIM free device is just greed of the highest order. If the phone was SIM free at say about 500 quid one off payment they'd sell them by the lorry load !

Ok, I have merged all the recent random iPhone chat threads here, its a bit confusing I know, I guess everyone will just have to quote more, and Ill prune it later when I have time.

If you have specific queries you can start a new thread (for now), and all general ranting and discussion should go here.
