Faulty WD External HDD - Advice Needed

    Hey guys,

So my friend's WD "mybook" external hard drive gave up the ghost. It doesn't appear to be a mechanical fault with the drive, rather the controller pcb seems to be the problem. Anyway, he needs the files on the drive but was wondering if perhaps buying an internal 3.5" SATA drive of the same model number (WD5000AAJS) would work. That way, he could transplant the controller onto the old drive and plug it into a PC.

Any ideas/suggestions? Has anyone had a similar problem before that they could shed some light on this subject.

    Cheers

Should work no hassle, thats if he is 100% sure its not the hdd. Has he tried taking the hdd out of the enclosure and using it internally to make sure its working ?

He got some of the elec technicians here to test the thing and they said no power was getting to the HDD through the controller.

The fuses on the PCB are shot. A new PCB should do the trick.
Match the serial number on the donor drive as close as you can to your friend's drive.

Sweet, thanks guys! HV.de seems to be the only place where you can get a close enough match on the drive model, but I think even this might be a bit risky. Might have to pay over the odds and buy locally for peace of mind.
