Including the bar??

    Does everyone include the weight of the bar with there squats, bench press, deadlifts etc?

    I don't, I always just count up the plates.

    I've heard of some lads in my gym saying they are llifting 70kg. But when I look on the bar there is only 50kgs of plates on it.

    Which is right?

    Include the bar - 20kg for an Oly bar... very happy day for me when I realised you were supposed to include the bar when talking about weightlifting...

    Bars vary in weight, it can be dangerous not to include it. I can see no logic to not including it for that reason.

    If you had a hollow 2kg bar at home and 50kg plates, and went to a gym and put 50kg on a 20kg bar you could be a dead man.

    What did you start out curling anyway, -5kg?;)

    And the pre-emptive answer to the second question is- it is the maximum weight they can lift for one single repetition, not 6. not 8 one, unless otherwise stated..

    That is another reason to change, it can affect some programmes. e.g if a programme is recommending an increase of 5% in weight per month or something.

    If you were curling a bar with 10kg of plates, then it is 30kg. An increase to 20kg of plates would be 40kg a 33% increase, while if only looking at the plates it is a 100% increase.
