chiropodist or someone else

    Hi All,

I am doing a lot of running (40-50 miles per week), and my feet are in bad shape after each long run.

I continuously get blood blisters, despite the use of blister plasters. Two of my toenails are also black at the moment (lost a toenail last year after a long run).

I have changed my runner type, plus use proper running socks.

Is there a specialist sports chiropodist in the Dublin region or should any chiropodist be able to help?

    Thanks.

Are your runners a size too big? They should be. Its the usual cause of a "subungual hematoma" or black toe (sounds like a kickback from the middle ages)! If they are very painful you can have a small hole bored into the nail to drain out the blood and relieve the pressure. If its an old one they sometimes remove the nail.

They are pretty common and its usually tight shoes, i know you've just changed them but they should feel too big when you put them on. Feet swell so much on the long runs which leads to awful friction and pressure.

I don't know too much about blister prevention except for the right socks which you already have, but the bigger shoes might help with that too. Keeping them clean, covered and not bursting them is a given really.

Feel for you though, nathin worse than painful feet.

    Hi lolo2,

    Thanks for your reply.

The runners are fine. I got measured specifically for running and got gait analysis done also.

I think its time to bite the bullet and go see a chiropodist.

Is there such a thing as a sport specialist chiropodist?
