O2 Data Services

Not sure if this is the correct forum.

I have a Nokia E70, bought from Komplett sometime back and not locked to O2. In the menu for connection options, I have O2 Post Pay, O2 MMS Post Pay and one that I think is GPRS.

Just checked our bill, I have been using the phone for email / testing and been smacked with fairly hefty charges which I assume have been GPRS.

How do I set the phone up to use a 3G type connection? Is there a rate for this from O2 (we have a business connection, so might speak to them about this) to allow push email etc?

    Thanks.

You should call O2 on the business support number (look up on web). If you are on a business tariff you will get dedicated support in getting your device setup

Was hoping someone had first hand experience and save me a call with their support team. I would suspect it would be easy enough to setup and under correct assume maybe something needs to be activated on the account to allow a data (3G) package.

There's nothing needs to be enabled on your account for 3G. If your internet works and your device is 3G enabled then away you go. You may possbly need to set your phone to CDMA/3G/Dual Mode under network in the settings but that would be all.

As for data packages, look at the O2 website. There are some available.

If you want someone to hold your hand call 1909 and have someone do it for you. They will also be able to tell you how much you've used.

As for Push email - does that device support Blackberry? If it does you could get that and tag it onto your business account for 20 quid a month (Ring O2 data support 1850 601740). That would be one option.

My phone has a setting to be in 3G mode and then fall back to GSM. I disabled this as I found that at times the phone would not switch to GSM and drop signal.

Assuming I was in '3G' mode, will all data by default (POP3 type email) come through 3G Data or does this have to be enabled over and above as an option on the phone?

Might give O2 a call tomorrow.

i get the impression that you think that using 3g will somehow be cheaper. it will be exactly the same price as using gprs

    Yes, I do.

If someone buys a 3G modem and gets a data package - lets say 5Gigs for €30 or whatever. Thats cheaper than GPRS up to 5Gig. How come this doesnt apply in this case then?

Your data service costs the same whether you connect over GPRS, EDGE or 3G on o2.

The data service by default is charged per KB. However you can avail of o2 Broadband (a dedicated SIM / different number) for a flat fee (subject to usage policy/limit), or you can buy addons/bundles for use on your main SIM (regular phone).

o2 offer 1GB and 10GB bundles which can be added on to your regular phone account, and you can then use your phone to connect via 3G which drops down to EDGE which drops down to GPRS.

Like I said whichever of the 3 services your phone uses, it'll be all the same in o2 billing terms.. it's all about the amount of data transferred.

I realise the '3G' Data offer is with the 2nd device (USB modem / sim). Would have thought / hoped that it could be done via a GSM account.

Thanks, understood. What im after then is to allow my phone to use this 1GB or 10GB bundle ....
