YouTube criticised for gang rape video
A video of a young mother being raped while her children cry in the background has sparked calls for the site to be moderatedJonathan Richards
Video comment: How does YouTube police itself?

YouTube is facing criticism for making it too easy for people to upload violent or sexually explicit content to the internet after a 25-year-old mother was filmed while being raped.

A three-minute film showing the mother sexually assaulted by three boys after her drink had been spiked was uploaded soon after the incident, which took place in November.

In the clip, which was filmed with a mobile phone, the mother appears to be unconscious, with her head lolling from side to side, as she is repeatedly raped. Her two-year-old daughter and four-year-old son are heard crying in the background.

I feel physically sick having read this.

YouTube cannot possibly review each video before approving them, and does have a self policing method included where members can report videos. I'm not sure what else could be done at the moment.

Lost for words a bit here, pretty sickening stuff.

Still, a vote for not censoring from me.

Saw something about this on the news earlier.

It's a little bit extremist censoring it because one idiot exploited it.

Surely they will have this person's IP address and can forward that to the cops.
That's all that really needs to be done.

Please don't joke about the word "lolling".

In before all the people posting 'vigilante compassion' e.g.: I hope they get raped with chainsaws they are sick ****s etc etc

On topic, I think YouTube has a pretty good policing system as it is, videos like the one mentioned are usually down within minutes.

Isnt youtube already moderated? Youtube remove offensive videos and its up to the users to report these kind of things too

Saw that yesterday, drugged her drink and raped her all night in front of her kids. Took 3 minutes of video at the end. They got the 3 guys thanks to their video.

I'm not getting why she opened the champagne with kids around

Was just going to ask that.

I think youtube is policed quite well at the moment. I don't know the ins and outs of this particular case but would these lads have got caught if the video hadn't have been put up?

there was a post here a few weeks ago about some guys harrassing some homeless fella on a few weeks ago. So it's not isolated

What sickens me the most about it, is there seems to be some sort of culture developing where people are doing this for youtube. It all started with the happy-slapping but is just out of control now.

When you think of the amount of videos they have up, and the length of time it'd take to watch each one, they couldn't possibly vet each video before it went online.

I don't see the problem, there's lots of disturbing stuff on the internet. Kids shouldn't have free unsupervised access to the internet, and adults should have enough cop-on and self-control to close the window on things they find disturbing, instead of whinging about censorship.

It's quite acceptible to have one drink in the presence of children. Wouldn't really affect your judgement.

I don't think they're doing it for youtube, they would do it either way. I suspect that's it's generally not even them that uploads it, they probably just record it to send on to a few mates, who send it on to a few more, untill someone uploads it to you tube.

That's - no, sorry THAT'S what concerns you? Not, how did teenagers get hold of date-rape drugs, or premeditate a gang-rape, or conduct it in front of two babies, or filmed it? :confused:x:confused:

No I don't think YouTube should be censored, there's enough policing of it already.

No don't censor it, just get rid of all those annoying vlogging arseholes. That will free up some time to catch vids like this before they do damage.

Yes actually. Was it a party or something? How/why were the kids there to begin with?

If she wasn't drinking would she still have been drugged?

    Just wondering really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 412 ✭✭MCMLXXXIII

Yeah, that's no good, but since YouTube does not censor the material, it was put up and the rapists were able to be identified and caught. If YouTube discarded the inappropriate video, those boys might still be on the run.

Also, I don't think YouTube should be held responsible either way. If they pledge to start censoring all videos and something gets through...the site will be responsible, not the person that posted the video and actually committed the rape.

However, it seems wierd to me that a grown woman (with children) would invite 14 year old boys in to have some champagne in the first place.

The whole thing seems fishy to me anyway - if you want to post stuff like that for everyone to see...just go to elsewhere.

I'm no software developer but would it be possible to create a program which could search for certain traits and indicators in the images and words said in the videos? It could filter these risky ones, which could then be reviewed before they were put up. It might lower the risk of something inappropriate being uploaded. If it is possible, patent pending ;):).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

    I doubt that is possible.

No way should it be censored, nothing on the internet should.

It just seems like something more was going on. If she brought out the champagne (not a beer, not regular wine, not even water), and she poured herself a glass...how did these boys get a hold of it for long enough to drug it without her noticing? Also, why were these boys carrying around date-rape drugs in the first place? What if she didn't pour herself a drink? Would they just try again later? If she was trying to be sociable, why didn't she pour them a glass? It makes it seem like the story is very incomplete.

Another thing - did the video actually show the babies, or could you just hear them crying?

I don't know how many 'robots' ive came across in youtube, and people spamming about some a girl called kalkai coming to kill me if i don't post it three times...They need to clamp down on these issues.

Eh youtube is already censored, but don't let silly little things like the facts get in the way of some good ole sensationalism.

According to the news this morning, there's about 10 hours of video uploaded on YouTube every minute. It would be very difficult to take detect every dodgy video immediately. Once reported, there always taken down straight away. In this instance it was reported that there were over 600 views of the video before it was taken down.

it sickens me to listen to spoofers pretending to be sickened by a so called sickening act of sickness that makes them sick.

Youtube as far as I have experienced are strict. Bloody funny things have all this bloody licensing requirements etc.... You know the sort.

Also o/t, how many of these morally high mounthpieces have skanky porn clips on their phone?

Purely sensationalist story , think about it , if every scumbag that commited a crime was dumb enough to post evidence against themselves on youtube the world would be a lot safer !

You have to doubt the validity of this story !

I have to agree. We wouldn't even need a police force so it would save the tax payer a fortune.

It would be possible to prevent posting videos to youtube until you verify your identity. You could use pps number (or international equivalent), credit card micropayments, etc. Of course the number of videos posted would plummet, so it won't happen, but is is possible if the will was there.

How is that of any relevance to the story at hand?

Would you prefer it was written with big words?

you act almost as if youtube contributed to this, or some how caused it. It's a bit silly to call for youtube to be censored due to this, when really you should be calling for those kids to be punished for what they did,

It's not really that ironic, it would be more ironic if the news presenter was being raped as he gave the story.

Even more ironic if you were getting raped while watching the news reporter getting raped while reporting on the rape video. Even more so if I was getting raped while commenting on you being raped while watching the news reporter getting raped while reporting on the rape video.

Youtube almost has a G-rating compared to most similar video sites.

I remember seeing a video where a guy committed suicide on video because Bjork ignored his letters or something and he was her nuber one fan. It was the most disturbing thing I have ever seen.

Btw the whole story around that seems to be dodgey and it was probably faked.
