MMA League '08 Opening Round Results

There couldn't have been a better kick off to the MMA League this year than the event we had in Galway on Saturday the 1st of March! over 67 competitors made the trip to Galway and got stuck in having a go at MMA the safe, fun and easy way.

    There is no way any one person could run an event the size of the one we had in NUI, Galway without help from some folks and I am severely indebted to the following people;

Clive Staunton and Colm O'Reilly for their refereeing, helping at registration and all around good humor during the day. (my vote for "Most Controversial Refereeing Decision goes to Colm, what say you Clive?)

Mark Smyth, Aaron Togher, Padraic Merlehan and Barry Oglesby for allowing themselves to be Roped in (sorry Barry :) ) to helping us out and getting the second ring up and running.

Sean Leonard for taking many, many high quality photographs (coming soon) and keeping the masses fed

A very special thanks to Darragh Kirwan for basically doing anything and everything in his power to keep the event running, at one point he was keeping time, updating the results and playing usher to one ring! My hero :)

As always, without fighters and coaches there would be no fighting (with rules) so a big thank you to everyone who participated.

Now all that pre-amble is out of the way down to the nitty gritty.

    The League is being run with 2 main aims this year;
    1. get more people than ever from new clubs involved
    2. get the events started and finished earlier
    3. streamline the results process to avoid errors

On Saturday there were several new clubs and swaths of new faces so aim 1 is going good so far.
We started earlier than any event last year, and despite being 20% bigger, still finished before 4pm. Not bad going at all!
The streamlining of the result taking hasn't gotten to where I want it just yet, we are getting better, but things like the times the matches finished at and how they were won/lost need a bit of work. How did we do on getting the right winners names at least? Please let us know! If the results below are incorrect then email me on info [at] mmaleague [dot] com and I will correct any errors.

Bobby O'Leary UCD MMA vs. Kinasiewicz Woziek UL BJJ draw

This wasn't a draw, Kinasiewicz hurt his arm in his bout with George O'Neill so he pulled out of our fight. In the end Peter Barrett (-85kg Rookie) and myself had a fight just so he'd get a chance to compete, it was the second last fight of the day and it went to a draw. Sorry if you already know this and wrote it down like that!
Ciaran Morgan Elite Martial Arts vs. Peter Barrett UCD MMA

Peter Barrett won this on a really early DQ, it was the first DQ of the day iirc, a light open palm to the face I think. You were refereeing at the time I think Mark.

    Sorry to nitpick!

I didn't modify any results just put up what was in the sheet, Colm actually beat you to it via email.

You are right Tim, Kiran won that one, not lost it. Adjusting results accordingly.

I knew I would forget someone, very special thanks to Fightlord! For sponsoring the league this year and ensuring that eveyrone could get all the equipment they needed for the event conveniently and competitively priced.

I notice an abundance of rashguards appearing at Point Blank now too, did you guys have anything to do with that? :)

Thanks to Stephen Bourke for a tremendous prize for Fastest Submission, won by David Majewski.

Best submission was given to Tom King, in a tremendously tecnical match with Barry Oglesby.

Eh, wait, yeah. I remember me and Tom coming to an agreement. I give him a "cool" submission and he and I split the prize yeah?

That was a good match alright. My open guard game works on other people I promise :D

Those Limerick boys would say anything to change their results :)

Where's my prize for most controversial decision?

I'm sure they would but Kiran is from Galway. :)

What did the Waterford lad get disqualified for (twice)?

And also, does anyone know anything about the Sambo school?

There was only one DQ for anything other than a head shot, neither of those were it.

Any idea on the sambo lads Mark? Where do they train?

    O'Brien's!!

Sambo!! Geddit? O'Brien's?:D I crack me up.

They train in Swords and I might be popping around to them for a session soon. They were all fit, strong and good.

    Wouldn't mind a sambo tbh!

Let me know how you get on. They seem to have done well. Would like to try get them involved in some judo competitions. Would be nice to mix things up a bit.

We might have sold one or two of them :D

A big thank you to everyone for their support in Galway. It was a great opportunity and we're looking forward to the next one....

We're thinking of bringing down some water, energy drinks, rehydration tablets, energy bars etc. next time... good idea?

If there's anything else you guys would like to see on the stand let us know and we'll see what we can do.

The judges gave it to Bres because of that devastating pro wrestling dropkick he used!

    Thanks.

If you've never competed before in the league you usually enter as a rookie. If you've competed in a previous season of the league or have fought at semi-pro level before or are "experienced" you usually compete as a veteran. That's the gist of it. <- unofficial, I'm just a fan of the league.

Yea I was right beside that when it happened and it was funny. What made it funny was that fact that the guy getiing kicked just stood there while the other guy bounced of him coooool :D
