According to the RTE website 'Prime Time' tonight will have another segment on more safety issues at the Port Tunnel.

Any guesses for what they may be? - im thinking the tiles falling off the roof myself:)

    Might be worth watching.

looking at the clips on the other thread it shows how dangerous crashes in tunnels can be... and getting stuck behind them... it was mostly about the fans, they had last fridays log showing 12 broke, NRA deny it all.

The fans are a very serious concern. In the event of a fire, I heard that the fans would be used to push the flames in the direction of the exit so as to allow people to escape from their cars, and to allow access for fire and other emergency teams via the entrance. No way should the tunnel be open until the issue is sorted out. The construction company (or whoever is responsible for the systems installion) should be sued for financial loss relating to not just the capital repair costs, but also the ecomonic fallout. At least, all cars, buses and petrol tankers should be banned from the tunnel in the meantime. The remaining goods vehicles should be limited to 50kph and forced to keep distance to stop the potential spread of any fire - obviously, the outer lanes would be effectively disused for the time being.

    Regards

That's nearly right. If there's a fire, the drivers after the fire will be able to continue out of the tunnel but the drivers before it will be blocked. The fans will push the air in the direction of traffic flow so that all the smoke is blown into the empty section of the tunnel so as the people inside will still have fresh air.

It pushes the smoke, not the flames. :)

It would push the flames also, they are hardly gone to 'flame' straight up with the wind generated by the fans, are they?

Obviously the flames will not be pushed all the way down the tunnel, but they will be directed in the direction of the wind

Actually, smoke travels by convection and dispersal, so you can blow the smoke, without blowing the flames as such.
