Moving programs to new hard drive?

    Hey all,

Say I buy a new PC and want to move some of the programs and databases on my current rig to the new one - is it a case of simply moving the folders in their entirety onto my external hard drive and onto the new machine (and locating the EXE files and adding shortcuts of the same to the start panel), or will this work for most of the programs I want? I've done it before with games and they have worked, but I wonder if other programs need to be installed rather than just moved to work. The thought of having to download and reinstall all the useful programs I use on an occasional basis, and reinstall from disk all the games I use, is really putting me off upgrading! The internal IDE hard drives I use are a little old at this stage so would not plan to use them (well, maybe one) in the new machine.

    Thanks.

In a word , no . You may have limited success but for the most part you need to reinstal your chosen applications .

Sorry to butt in but I have a similar question. I want to know what programs/files can i move to my d drive? My c drive is totally full, and the d drive is empty. But i'm not sure if i can store applications like games and music etc on the d drive or is it just documents? And how do I even go about moving them? As you can see I'm a bit of a computer novice...

You can move any file that does not require system type files I think, so mp3s, movies etc can be copied over without problem.
