How Can You Tell If Your Cancellation Is Gone Through?

You have to ring before there is 10 days left till your test so I rang on Friday. You have to press like a million numbers (tiny exaggeration!) until you go through to the cancellation number but you don't talk to anyone, just leave your name, DOB, test code number and address and phone no. and a reason for cancelling. After that nothing happened, so I just hung up but how can you tell if it's cancelled properly or not? I didn't have a chance to ring today and check and even if I did, it's still less than 10 days till the exam would have been on.
Has anyone else cancelled over the phone before, and can you tell me how it worked for you? And if I ring tomorrow and it hasn't been cancelled, they can't still charge the fee can they, cos surely they would have a record of the call?
Anyway, thanks if you have any answers.
Oh for the days before computerised phone services:)

Recorded messages are checked day after and you should get a letter within 5/7 days after you left message.

A little word of warning though...if you don't get a confirmation letter, contact them again - I spend hours (quite literally) on the phone waiting to speak to someone after the letter didn't arrive, only for the woman to tell me I had already sat my test...I hadn't, but she was adamant that I had, so best to make sure you get the letter!!
