A man has been taken to hospital after a train and car collided on a level crossing in County Antrim, the police have said. The 0650 GMT Belfast train collided with the car at an automated crossing on the Old Cullybackey Road, Ballymena.

The driver of the car, aged in his 40s, has been taken to hospital.

Richard Knox from Translink said he believed the man was conscious. It is understood his injuries are not thought to be life threatening. "Any incident involving a car at a level crossing has the potential to be very serious," he said. Ciaran Rogan from Translink said the 71 passengers on the train were unhurt. Rail services between Ballymena and Ballymoney have been suspended.

"We will be carrying out a full investigation when the scene is returned to us," Mr Rogan said.
