Why 3 Skype only in 3G and only on S60?

Why Skype client needs UMTS coverage and is not available to more phones on 3.

My understanding of the client is that, it handles your login, shows you your contacts. When you select a contact to ring, it sets a value on the 3/iSkoot server that this is the contact you wish to ring. Then it makes a "voice" call to the 3/iSkoot server which handles the initialising if the skype call. The client does not handle the calls, it only sets the value of the user you wish to ring. You can verify this by exiting the skype client completly. Now ring that 3/iSkoot number yourself manually, you'll be put through to the last user that you selected in the client.

Shouldn't this only require gsm coverage? As applications can hangle data transfer in gsm coverage and the iSkoot client wouldnt require much data transfer seeing as the skype call is done over gsm voice.

Another thing, it seems a midp2.0 application should be able to do the work of the iSkoot client, therefore more phones would be able to avail of this service rather than S60 phones only.

    My 2c.

    Any thoughts?

the reason is that all their 2g coverage is done by vodafone and they have to pay them to use it, so they block people from donig it. there's no technical reason for it
