What about that new Sony Erricsson K850i? The camera on that is supposed to be oustanding (which I'd believe as SE cameras are generally top notch). iirc it's a 5mp.

Alternatively.. a cheap phone and a nice point & shoot might be a decent option.

the samsung is free on my contract (meteor) , whilst the SE is a min of 100 euros -- but i do like the SE , aprt from my dying battery --

btw - never got to meet you this weekend -- did ya get a chance to pop in

Well ... as someone who sells camera technology to both SE and Samsung (and the rest too) I'd say there is not much between them ... in fact they are using the exact same Sensor manufacturer ...

Of all the Mobile handset makers SE and Samsung are the only two who really take it seriously to the point of considering the P&S makers as competition ... In fact at Samsung they even consider their own P&S makers as competition ...

I've had a play (specifically to see how the camera performs) with all of the latest mobiles at the GSMA conference in Barcelona a few weeks ago ... as far as I'm concerned Samsung and SE are the best of what I saw ... they are both starting to produce very acceptable result from something with such a small lens ... but don't expect too much ... the sensors use smaller pixels than P&S ... and are therefore prone to more noise issues ... particularly at higher ISO ... by higher I'm talking 400 in this case ...

Can't remember if Samsung have the Xenon flash yet ... but SE do ... these are far more powerful than the LED flash units on most phones ...

All in all I would recommend a camera phone to replace P&S ... for casual use ... In my case I use it when I'm out and about without my SLR and I see something that gives me an idea ... which I then later come back with the SLR to shoot ...

I've been using the SE K800i, Nokia N82 and N95 lately ... the SE is better ... but the N82 is not too bad and it has a Xenon flash ...

a good site would be www.gsmarena.com or www.mobile-review.com (then on the top click on english)

i used those two sites to figure out if i wanted a symbian or just a normal java phone.

I didnt unfortunately. Had to leave Dublin a bit earlier than expected. Didn't get to do a couple of things I'd lined up

I have K800i and its camera (3mp) is the best I've ever used on a phone but it still really cannot compete with a proper p&s camera.

I have a SE 630i 2MP phone. Its not bad at all for a camera phone but not a scratch on my old Samsung S230 P&S brick!

Lost my phone on friday so grabbed the K800 and it's a little slow with shutter lag but has amazing image quality for a phone.

Buy a 500 euro camera phone and stick a 14 dollar lens in front of it... Actually for 14 dollars what's the worst that could happen :D

in fairness... 380 euro... At the very least it's a portable solution for peeping toms

It's dropped down to 380? Cool, I'm stuck in the ages it would seem.

I got at Nokia N95 & the camera is very good, for a phone.
Have a 4GB MicroSD card in it, so there's loads of room.

Now you're just making me feel old :(

    to the OP:
I was quite impressed by the K800i's camera (as compared to the N73, N95 and K850i's camera) and low cost - great phone with great battery life. Look on flickr to see photos taken by it - seems like a reasonable snapshot camera (has xenon flash for low light)

Isn't the K850i's camera supposedly better? And there's the new N83's camera too...
