Ok, I'm off Skiing in Sierra Nevada's in Spain this thursday. I've read a few threads on skiing gear but can't find what I want. All I want to know is what gear should I buy here before I go and what gear can I get there. I know I can rent the ski's, boots and ski suit over there. Should I buy hat, gloves, jacket, neck gator here before I go. I have nothing and have never been skiing before. I live in D15 so have access to Fifty Three Degrees North shop and the rest of Blanchardstown Shopping Centre before I go. All advice welcome.

Ski/snowboard clothing & equipment are an absolute rip-off here in Ireland. You would be better off buying all of your stuff in the ski resort, it is much cheaper and they always seem to have sales at this time of year.

So you're saying I should buy absolutely nothing here? What footwear should I bring? I'll just bring ordinary clothes for going out at night.

Bring a decent winter jacket and a waterproof pair of shoes and you will be sorted. As for going out at night, just wear clothes that you would wear here. Oh and bring hight sun screen when you are on the mountains!

Are you planning to ski or snowboard? You can rent out ski/board boots in the resorts and you can pick up jackets and pants at any resort for a fraction of the price that you would pay in Ireland. I bought a pair of Burton snowboard pants for €60 at a ski resort and I saw the exact same pair in The Great Outdoors for €180. It's unreal what they charge over here!

Good quality wrap around shades are essential IMO.

Dunnes have just put their ski stuff on sale today so if you can get there you'd pick up a good quality jacket and pants. were 80 euro last week and down to 15 euro tonight. you'll always wear the jacket here - i'd buy the hat/gloves etc here too if you get them cheap enough. while waiting around to get kitting out with stuff on the slopes you could get cold enough. Dunnes stuff is plenty warm and waterproof too.

If you are a man this is all you need for skiing.

    1. A couple of T-shirts for each, one long sleeve, one short sleeve.
    2. A good jacket that will repel moisture to a certain extent, it does not have to be 100% waterproof.
    3. A pair of football socks
    4. A pair of synthetic track suit bottoms that, like the jacket, will repel water to a certain extent, not cloth ones that will become soaked.
    5. A pair of cycling type spandex shorts
    6. A pair of regular sports shorts.

With all the above you should not get too wet and if you do you will dry out fairly quickly. And while you are skiing, i.e. moving, you will not be too cold.
