    Hi Niamh,
I'm a Speech and Language Therapist, I graduated from Trinity about 2 years ago. I personally love my job and enjoyed the course, however, I know a lot of girls in my class found it tough going. It's a lot of work and a lot work outside actual lecture time (eg preparing for clinical placements, essays, presentations etc). It's a very diverse course, you study lots of science-y subjects like Anatomy and Physiology and lots of Arts-y ones as well like Psychology and Linguistics. I don't know much about the course in UCC or Galway but I would imagine the subjects and hours are pretty similar. As a job, it's also very diverse, there are so many areas that you can work in, however, at the moment it is tough to get jobs (although hopefully by the time you graduate that will be a lot better!). If its something that you are interested in, I would definitely recommend getting some work experience with a Speech and Language Therapist in your area or at least talking to one, I think most ppl would agree that the course is tough going but the job makes it all worthwhile!
    Hope that helps

I can't figure out why it's so tough to get a job- I've been looking EVERYWHERE for a speech therapist who will take on adults, but I can't find one. What's the deal with that?

because there's a job freeze still going on in the HSE. Previous open vacancies have been abolished and only new posts that are approved by some committee can recruit..so it means more admin and less frontline staff...

    What about private practices?

I'm another 5th year interested in speech therapy, and I was wondering if the course workload is such that there's not really time for extra curriculars. Any info?

Hmmm, regarding extra-curriculars I think it just depends on the kind of person you are, I always managed to balance things and have a life outside of the course as well and a few of my friends would have been the same but I know other girls who just got very stressed about things and felt like they didn't have much free time... So I would say it would depend on how stressed out you get about things in general and if you have specific things you're really interested in (sport, music etc) then you'll probably always find a way to squeeze them in anyway! Hope that makes some sense...

    Hi there

I would also like to do a Masters in Speech Therapy and was wondering if anyone knows if any universities or colleges in Dublin have this course?
I can only seem to find it at Limerick University or in the Uk.

Also, does anyone know of any Speech Therapists in the Dublin area who offer work experience? I would love to get some real insight into the exact work they do as Linguistics degrees only give you an idea.

Any other handy hints or help in this area would be great too :)

    Thanks

I am in first year in the UL masters. There is only the one masters course in the whole of Ireland and its very competitive entry. What is your undergrad in?you do need a fair bit of expereince to get in, so your best bet is to ring up your local health centres, and the SLT departments in hospitals and ask if you can shadow their SLT.

There are loads of courses in the UK. Sheffield, reading, essex, UCL, City university london, newcastle.

I think thats all of them!

ask me anything u want, i went to interviews in nearly all of those UK universities too!
