ah yeah.....a lens cleaning would be the first port of call....after than crack it open and make sure the interface cables are seated properly

Just buy a new DVD-RW drive, they're only 30 quid at the moment for a 20X writer.

If you're using 10.4.11 then it should work with all the iLife apps. Toast and Finder will work fine in my experience. Leopard, if you have it, won't know the difference.

The 2002 models used a Pioneer DVR104 model drive which by todays standards is ancient. They had a 4x burn speed on DVD-R iirc and were very fussy about the brand of media you fed them.

Thanks guys, I think its time to change the drive. I'm currently using 10.4.11 and hopefully will get the drive as advertised. Is it compatible with system, interface and fascia?

The front lip of the drawer is removable on nearly all drives. With that gone there is no other physical difference. The fitted drive has no eject button but that won't be an issue.

Edit: Make sure the jumper on the rear of the drive is set to CS (Cable Select) - see here.

If possible stick to Pioneer brand drives. This one is reported to be fully compatible with 10.4.11 onwards although systems with slower bus speeds may not realise the full speed potential of the drive.

If you're operating 10.4.3 or lower you may need to install PatchBurn Lib to enable support for the iApps, iPhoto, iDVD etc.

so if i read this correctly if someone had a combo drive they could hook up a super drive ( like the one Zen mention above) to their mac

I depends on the Mac, any of the tower Macs running Tiger or above will take a standard IDE DVD-RW drive.

iMacs like the original fruit colours were a bit more tricky but possible. The newer G5 and Intel models I'm not sure about. these take Slot load drives but I don't know if they're laptop types or full sized drives.

Notebooks are upgradable too but but again it's not as straightforward. If you're brave enough then the parts are available !

    Instructions here !;)
