Anyone got any advice on what could be done to manage, store and make it easier to categorise different photos?

I have a simple setup at the minute what I use.. As follows:

External harddrive, "photos" folder, in that folder I would have different categorys (IE animal/wildlife, portrait, b&w, landscape" folders with the corosponding images in each. Then I'd have a "800x600" folder with some of my best images in, for web use.

Now it still does me grand the way it is, but is there another way or something which people use to make life easier when sorting photos?

What do people think about online albums, any particular favourites for people to showcase there best work to the full?

I just use folders too, though I'm pretty sure Lightroom has capabilities to organise stuff for you. Haven't gotten around to checking it out yet.
