Nothing to do

OK, so I'm really fed up about work. Finished a project in January, and have another one starting in a few weeks. However, am feeling a bit bored and unloved for the last few weeks. It drives me mental when I dont have something specific to do.

Tried speaking to my manager about it, and he basically told me to start doing some other stuff that my colleagues were supposed to be working on, but hadn't completed. Obviously, this severely p!ssed my colleagues off, and so I left them to it and explained to my manager that it was already in hand by the others.

What's annoying me is that I'm left sitting with nothing to do (I know, I know everyone is probably thinking I'm crazy for complaining), but it's been over 6 weeks now and I'm DEMENTED, and I still have another 3.5 weeks to go.

Have had a few moans about it to my manager over the 6 weeks. But now, am debating whether to go back to him and say I'm still going nuts. I don't want him to think i'm just being negative.

sorry for the rant, any advice more than welcome

Join the club; i think the turnaround time for projects is ridiculous. Why can't you start the new project, all the little dots have to be signed...? I am nearly in the same situation, guess what i did? I kept barging my line manager and managers with emails and now i am working on something.
    Persistence is the key :)

Yes, waiting for t's to be crossed and i's to be dotted. I know I dont have a hope in hell of getting the next project brought forward, but no matter how persistent i am, he just seems a bit slow to act or something. It's really starting to get me down. Right, off to send another email to him now...

I don't get this bit. How are your colleagues pissed off about you helping out on their stuff? The other thing is that I'd listen to your manager rather than your colleagues when it comes to work priorities.

I've seen this before - people can take it personally, as if you assisting is a comment on their inability to do their own work. They may think you're trying to "one up" them. Obviously not true of everyone, but it does happen.

That's exactly it. Mostly it is stuff that they were supposed to complete, but didn't. Now that they realised my boss has noticed it, all of a sudden it's top priority and they don't want to look like someone else had to 'do it for them'

I could have posted this as I am the same situation except I have no projects coming my way! It has been like this for the last year but finally I have gotten off my bottom to do something about finding a job that stimulates my brain. If I had no access to Boards I dont know what I would be doing :D

Lol Keano. I know I should be enjoying the peace and quiet but it just makes me bored!

Sent a mail to my manager about 1.30pm asking to speak to him, but no reply yet. He's been in meetings most of the afternoon though, so I can't really complain.

It doesn't take long to get very bored with no work to do, so I don't think you're crazy at all.

This all depends on your industry (and possibly your internet access), but if your manager isn't expecting any output from you, then think about taking the time to learn some new technologies / techniques / soft skills or whatever that may help you in the future. I've had a few "down time" periods between projects as well, and that helped pass the time in a pretty productive way.

I can understand the problem OP has. A quiet week or maybe two drinking coffee and browsing the web is fine but ten...

I'd be seriously considering a job change if I was being left with nothing to do. As eoin_s says, if the time isn't spent looking for a new job it's probably best spent improving your own skills. Obviously the scope for this would depend on the area of work.

Just ask your manager to allow you to go out and do some sort of training course for a week. Then spend the rest of the time going over the stuff that was covered. And if it is possible to get a certification in that training complete the test in the 3rd week.
