Would you be embarrassed if...

... your laser/credit card was rejected (for whatever reason) at the till?

Or if the alarm sounded when you left a shop because the security tags on your purchases hadn't been desensitised?

Or if you were attempting to take money out of an ATM machine and a message came up advising you that you had insufficient funds?

Or if you were getting a few groceries and you discovered you didn't have enough cash so you had to put stuff back?

I have heard people claiming that they'd be "mortified" if any of the above happened to them. Can't actually understand why. In the case of the first two, is it because people might think they're attempting to carry out fraud/theft? In the case of the last two, is it because people might think they're poor?
Do people really think total strangers give that much of a sh1t? Or is there anyone that would allow any of the above scenarios affect how they'd view a person?

I get quite pissed off when this happens, the person didn't do their job properly and I have to go back to them.

    The others, no.

Yeah it is annoying all right. But embarrassing? That's what I'm wondering.

OMG!!!! I'd be mortified if any of those things happened to me! What would people think!?! Everyone would stare at me and judge me and whatnot!!!

The security beep alarm is always going off at our locaL TESCOS for that very reason ,security tags not being desensitised and it must happen at least 20 time in a hr every time i /we are there .People i think have long stopped being embarressed but it should not happen as frequent as it does ,there mistake not yours .

something happened to me in Superquinn once.
I cant really remember exactly. i think i had a small amount of Cash on me but i was handing her my Laser card to pay (It was a tough month) in fairness i did think there was probably no money in it but i thought it would still let me even if there wasn't. I ended up having to put back one or two things but i wasn't embarrassed at all. its only ever happened once.

I think if a security guard stopped me after the shop things beeped...well no, my initial thought was i would be embarrassed but i really wouldn't because i'd have the receipt. i wouldn't get embarrassed im not really like that!

I've never met anyone who would be. People were always putting things back when I worked in shops. No one gave a damn. Why would something like that upset anyone?

No, and it has happened a few times but usually because of a faulty card/reader. I once had a narky shop assistant who insisted on voicing it to the entire queue that my card had been rejected, saying 'are you sure there's enough money in it?'. I called for the manager (not for that incident alone but she was just being a beeyotch in general), explained that I knew there was money on the card and asked for it to be tried on a different machine. Bingo, the transaction went through no probs, the manager said the assistant would be reprimanded.

No, because I don't steal and because I know that there are grounds for me to sue the store should they make a big deal about stopping me and searching my bags.

I wouldn't be embarrassed, I'd just be secretly raging to myself. Sure who'd be around to be embarrassed in front of?
    Dudess wrote: »

Luckily I've never had this happen to me. Maybe I would be slightly red about this, depending on the amount of time I'd wasted in going around getting the shopping.

I don't think the embarrassment would be due to the thought of what strangers think about you. Personally I'd just be raging that I'd wasted my time i.e. in doing all the shopping and getting to the till only to discover I'd no dollars. Who gives a fig what others think.

Yes, I've had to put things back and had my cc declined. I don't care. I usually laugh it off and tell them how broke i am!

When the alarm goes off at the door you should just keep walking

At least give a security guard some work to do like chase you down the road a bit... you have the receipt so the stuff is yours

I know this english guy who had his 2 credit cards rejected while i was with him in tesco before. He went bright red and eventually pulled out some american express gold card or something and waved it around like "look at me i have one of these". That was the embarrasing bit for me, to be seen with such a knob end

Happens every single tuesday! I have a DD to transfer money into my credit union account, only €50 but if i use my laser card in a shop on a tuesday it gets declined, no matter how much is in there. AIB are baffled!

Or if the alarm sounded when you left a shop because the security tags on your purchases hadn't been desensitised?
Happened many times. Once in Gucci 5th Avenue NY!

Or if you were attempting to take money out of an ATM machine and a message came up advising you that you had insufficient funds?
    Not for a long time!

Or if you were getting a few groceries and you discovered you didn't have enough cash so you had to put stuff back? Nope never happened but before my mam drove i used to drive her and she done it many times, i always paid, she forgets everything!

None of the above embarass me, they are just things that happen.

These two are embarrasing. At the ATM if you start big and get nothing then have to go down and down trying to get anything out of it and there's a big cue behind you that watches you walk away with nothing after holding them up for 5 minutes.

Not having enough cash on you isn't so much of a problem in my town they'll let you pay some other time. It's damned annoying when I go to another town and realise I forgot to bring money.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

The scenario you describe is embarrassing in that I would feel uncomfortable with holding people up at the ATM machine for ages, but a girl recently said to me she'd be really embarrassed if it happened on the first go. Bizarre. Apart from the fact that there just doesn't seem to be anything embarrassing about that, they're total strangers. Wtf?

Why would it be embarrasing? can the people see what you're doing? Do they care? do they know you? does their opinion of you make any difference to your life? do you think they have nothing else to think about than to laugh at your lack of funds in one of the most expensive countries in the world?

Why do you let what other people think embarrass you

    odd.

Meh, most people don't retain such specifics the way you do.

About 2 months ago I was at the checkout, put my stuff through and on the last few items I copped on I had no wallet. I had a bunch of coins in my backpack and told the guy to stop as I would have to put stuff back. I was counting out the coins, around €8 in coins, all my stuff was only worth around €12.

So I am there deciding what to keep and what to put back, then the woman behind be (well dressed, maybe 50) takes out her credit card and offers to pay for my stuff! I sort of laugh and say "no thanks, I just left my wallet at home, it is not that important". She then seemed sort of embarrassed, bit awkward for everybody!

I was then outside unlocking my bike and she came over to me and said "sorry I hope I didn't embarrass you, its just it was only a small bit of money", I told her it was fine and thanks for the offer and that I wasn't embarrassed. I suppose it did look like she was offering charity in a way, which sort of infers she thought I looked like I needed it.

I heard a joke like that before, go to the supermarket with just enough small coins to get a 6pack of beer. Go to the checkout with nappies babyfood and the beer. Then tell the cashier to take back the nappies and food saying in a slurred voice "ah sure the little fecker will be grand". Then watch the face of disgust on everyone around!

Many years ago in my teens I was sitting across from burgerking on grafton street. I had been thrown out for drinking beer and was waiting on my mates. I was sitting there plastered, can in hand. Along comes a woman and hands me money telling me to get something to eat, I start laughing and hand it back saying "can't I'm barred", she was shaking her head like "oh the poor fella is homeless AND cant even get a bite to eat"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

With the exception of walking out with tags on, they've already happened to me and I wasn't embarrassed in the slightest.

In the case of the card, it got refused because my payment hadn't gone through yet. I told the cashier to hold the items and I went out and got the cash to pay for them.

In the case of not having the cash, I put the stuff back and bought it the next time I was in the shop.

    I don't see why you'd be embarrassed. I couldn't give a **** if someone thinks I can't afford something.

I don't know if embarassed is the right way to describe it, but I'm pretty self conscious and I hate the thought of people looking at me (I know!) so when the tag is left on clothes or whatever and an alarm sounds as I'm leaving a shop, I am very aware that everybody turns round to look and my face goes bright red. Then the fact that I know my face has gone red makes it even worse. I blush at anything though :o

Well that's fair enough. Yeah it's uncomfortable when everyone's suddenly focusing on you.
There was a discussion on the credit card/Laser thing on some phone-in show and all these people were saying stuff like "my card was rejected and I just wanted the ground to open up and swallow me". Laughable. Are they so self-absorbed that they really think total strangers give that much of a sh1t? Ooh maybe it looks like they're trying to commit fraud! Or... worse still... they don't have enough money in the card, so they might be... god forbid... a bit poor?!

People don't realise that unless the person behind you in the queue is the English Queen there isn't a person in the world who hasn't been a little short of cash once in a while. Nobody cares if today is your day or if the bank's system has just ****ed up.
