    Right,

I teach English in a primary school in Hong Kong. Their primary system is like our secondary system where you have specialist teachers - English /maths / art etc.
I did a PGDE at Hong Kong University - but obviously it trained me how to be a teacher in Hong Kong... so I haven't been trained how to teach maths, for example.
Also - I did pass Irish for my Leaving Cert (think I got a C) and have forgotten most of it.

Now I want to move back to Dublin and get into teaching. No doubt some amount of re-training will be required. I'd like any advice I can get :

    - should I try to go into primary or secondary?
    - is there any demand for 'ESL' teachers in primary schools?
    - would I be able to do a H-dip with only pass Irish?

    cheers
    b.

PS - I have a Degree in English Lit (and Italian) from UCD :)

I suspect you would need a post grad in primary teaching from either an Irish or English college. I dont know if non European unspecialised primary teaching qualifications would be recognised.

For primary, you'd certainly have to sit an SCG Irish assessment at least. Without an honour in your leaving cert Irish, your options are quite limited in Ireland.

If I was you, the quickest way to get primary teaching in Ireland would be to do a PGCE course in the UK and come back to do the SCG in Ireland then.

For secondary, you might need another secondary H.Dip, but these can be done in Ireland.
