DOE test

I have a van that failed the DOE test today on a few things. The strange thing is, there are four fail items that passed last year even though they have not changed. These are- wrong type headlamp, insecure mounted headlamp, insecure battery mount & illegible number plate.
This year i went to a specialist test centre but last year i went to a dealership that also did tests. This makes me think that different garages have different standards? I know where ill go for the retest.....

If you have after market headlights they probably noticed this, they do a headlight level/glare test as part of the process. 'Fancy' for want of a better word numberplates are a no no in any gov. related test? No excuse there. Had your battery mount come loose between the two test periods?

Yes some TESTERS are more sticky than others, but its up to the individual doing the test, not the garage that the test is done in. Depends on who they have employed in other words, the testers themselves are subject to spot check examination and can lose their licence if they are found to be passing failable items.

We had a small truck fail its DOE the other day due to the numberplate light mounting being loose (bulb was working ok) EVEN though its double plated at the back so there was another light and number plate on the other side that was in perfect order!

Usually for smaller fail items like the ones you had dont require a full retest, if you take it back to the guy that did the test initially and show him that you have fixed the outlined problems, then he will usually issue a certificate on the back of this and not put it through all of the motions again.

I did the DOE once in a dealers. They didn't seem overly bothered about it. It failed because it needed new tracking rods, but the guy gave me the cert (before I got new tracking rods) on the condition I paid him to fit the new tracking rods, which I got done a few days later.
