Trunk Twists

    Hi All,

I'm just wondering what your views are on trunk twists - working Int & Ext Obliques & Transverse Abdominis.

I ask as I was having a discussion about them with one of my fellow coaches in my club and she insists that she can see no way that they work. I think what she was trying to imply was that as opposed to sit ups with feet in the air, reverse curls etc (being the normal exercises we would do) they don't seem to hurt so therefore she does not see how they work.

Just wondering what your opinions are.

Personally i would see them as more of a mobility/warm up thing that an actual excercise as part of training.

If i really want to smash the area's in question i tend to go for Russian Twists.

    Which are??

I actually need some very good ab conditioning exercises if anyone has any.

I'm a gymnastics coach and obviously strong core etc is needed for gym. I've tried to alter the conditioning programme but it has been rather unsuccessful as the 2 other coaches don't have the anatomy background that I do (I'm a physical therapist & sports rehab therapist) so when i'm not in coaching on a particular day they find it hard to remember the exercises and the purpose of them etc.

we've normally stuck to things such as rocking in dish, dish hold, sit ups with feet in air, scrunchies, v sits etc.... everything is fairly basic. no other equipment used except self. the gymnasts do have weights in which they use for bicep curls, leg work etc

Any exercises given are very welcome!! Also this is a group of 22 gymnasts so essentially having 22 swiss balls in the gym isn't going to happen!!

Dragon Flags are one of the most evil core exercises you could do.

I would be very surprised if you can find a person who you train that can do one.

You can get your peeps to pair up, instead of holding onto the bench like in the vid, get them to put their head between their partners feet and hold onto their ankles.

    oooooh interesting!!

yes I doubt very much hey could do them. As they are our "top" gymnasts (at competitive) standard, alot of them are quite flexible so generally use their back to do everything and they'll just sag as soon as they initiate the move.

Might try it for myself though once I get back in to training. I cant imagine my back taking too kindly to this at the moment... i am post compressed discs injury at the moment and backs still not great. Killing me not to be able to do anything

The idea of pair work is great, they could also hold onto the floor beam etc..hmmmm!!! Thanks for that!!

if there's anymore from anyone, keepin 'em coming!!
