    Hello,

I want to recover data from a laptop, the registry is damaged and before i do a recovery i want to make sure i have all my data backed up. On a regular PC i can just pull out the hard drive and put it in another pc but ive never done it on a laptop, i presume ill need to buy some hardware, wheres the best place online to get this or how is this done?

Remove the HD and put it in a 2.5" inch caddy like this one. Then you can hook it up to the desktop via USB to get files off it.

Yeah extenal case is the way to go.

I wouldn't necessarily agree - it depends on what you are used to.

Personally, rather than go at a laptop with a screwdriver, I would prefer to fire up a Linux CD and just copy everything over to a memory stick or DVD.

Having said that, generally speaking, laptop hard-drives tend to be easy enough to remove. Unless of course it is a Sony.....don't get me started. :)

Following of from the suggestions about buying a HDD caddy you could get one of these - thr reviews are mixed to say the least

The Ubuntu live CD is another option, for the most hardware support it really depends on which is the later release at the time.

if you have 1GB of RAM or more then using the toram switch in knoppix means you can eject the CD and use the drive to burn one
