Want to buy laptop for Internet and Games

Hi All,

I am basically looking for a laptop basically for the internet and games.

I want to be able to look at Videos Youtube etc...

Anybody know of computers that are worth a try?
Also what price should I be looking at for this?
Also what type of interntet package should I get and with whom?

I reckon this would make the price far more.

But would Internet speed be the same on a computer worth lets say 500 euro then computer worth 1500 euro?

Yer computer wont affect the web speed per se; long as you have broadband you'll be fine.

Check out the bargin alerts forum and the dell laptops thread. The vostro is a very nice piece of hardware and will run quite a lot of the newer games.

Comes in around the ton mark give or take a bit.

Cheers for that I will have a look, yes I am willing to pay around a grand hopefully not too much more.

One final question Is the internet speed on laptop as quick as desktop. I presume it be little slower? And is there much difference?

The speed of the internet shouldn't be any slower on a laptop compared to a desktop. All that matters is the speed of your broadband, my 900mhz eee pc is just as fast as my 1.66 core 2 duo processor machine.

One thing you have to understand about laptops is that they are built for portability. If you want to add extra power, e.g. to play games, you are going to pay for the privilege.

Have you considered a low-end laptop and a decent PC, the latter purely for games?

There is no difference between network speeds on a laptop vs. a desktop. The laptop will utilise the internet connection just as well as a desktop.

I would rather have games and internet on the laptop rather then getting desktop. Thanks for your help

The reason I point this out is that you are looking at over €1000 for a decent, games playing laptop.

I see little more expensive then I taught. I would be happy enough to pay that if it was update laptop all same.

You'll get a laptop with the 8600M graphics card for under a grand - the Vostro is one machine that a lot of budget gamers go for.

It's a mid-range laptop card, and in that respect, it'd be considered low-range compared to what desktop gamers are using these days. But it WILL play fairly recent games, at fairly decent settings. Just don't expect to be playing Crysis or anything on it...old stuff like the HL2 series should work fine. And COD4 should be playable if you keep the settings medium or low-ish.

To get higher performance out of a laptop, there's a huge jump between the mid-range and high-end. The 8800M is the current best laptop card, and I doubt you'll get change out of 2 grand for a laptop with one in it. I only know of a couple with it, Dell M1730, Alienware m15x, maybe some Rock laptops..

That's just the way it goes, as Tom Dunne says, laptop gaming is just inherently expensive.

Edit-I saw a couple of M1730s with twin 8700M graphics cards in the Dell outlet going for around e1200 pre-tax. The 8700 isn't a great card, but that'd give you a big screen and reasonable performance for the money. Let me know if you need help finding the page.

If it were to cost 2 grand then think be better off leaving it. TBH once I had decent Internet I would be happy enough that be 80% reason for getting one but would also like half decent laptop that's why I am willing pay few extra for one rather then getting one for 300 euro

crysis will run on the 8600gt at 800*600 and some detail on and cod4 runs fine at 1280*800 with detail turned up.

XPS M1710 with 7950GTX still very good gaming machine. You can get it under 1300 on Ebay.
XPS M1730 8700M GT powerful too,played Call Of Duty with 1920x1200 resolution, almost everything max. Can get for less than 1500 on Ebay.
XPS m1730 with DUAL 8800GTX is the best gaming machine but over 2 grand on Ebay. I had one myself and played with everything max

You can pick up something with a 8600GT/7900GS (256mb) thats a decent compromise. You won't be able to play the latest and the greatest but you'll be be able to play most things. If you keep an eye on the Dell outlet you pick up one for €700~1000. Some Dells the 1710/1720/1520/1530 have that. Like saflyinglion said the M1710 with 7950GTX (512mb) is a decent bit faster and you can pick that up for about 1200 on the Dell outlet. Ditto the other stuff he said. Theres a Dell outlet on ebay and another one on the main Dell store. While the 1730 has the 8700M GT single/8700M GT Dual/8800GTX. It is huge and has practically no battery life. My 9400 with a 7900GS gets about 2/2.5 hrs battery life with a 9cell battery. I'm sure the 1710/1720/1520/1530 have usable battery life.
