who would you decide gets the money?

I listen to the radio too much for my own good and have notice some amazing views. So here is a scenario

There are three pupils

Student A
Autistic child and in order for him to get the best treatment they need individual teaching. This will in the long run mean that he will cost the state more money in care if not properly taught
Student B
Socio path child due to his parents. If not educated in emotional response likely to end up in prison costing the state a vast amount
Student C
Genius child unchallenged by the education system. Under achieves in a mediocre job costing the state little.

Where do you spend your limited resources?

You could get the wasters off the dole by putting a minimum of 6 months free welfare before you have to work for your dole.
Then you'd have enough to cover all 3 cases.

This senario is unrealistic, there's enough money to give some to all groups. Who should get more money? I don't know, they're all important social issues that need to be tackled.

It's unhelpful to think that if we give money to one group it means not giving to another, equally deserving one. They all need funding and there are different organisations which ensure that they all get funding.

I think the whole point in education is to help a child be the best he can possibly be regardless of his abilties. So this is an impossible question to answer, best I can think of is to split the resources three ways and do the best we can with it.

Then I'd lock the genius in a room with the sociopath and a knife which can only be released by solving a number of puzzles each more fiendish than the last. I would pipe this out to the masses in the form of a reality TV show and have the autistic kid host it. No-one would care as they'd only be staring at the amazing newly purchased bahamajads. I would sell this format abroad and make millions.

Somebody has to make these decisions. I am amazed at the radio listening/radio callers have all the sympathy for a particular group without considering the full picture. I think you might find every student with needs would be be helped by individual experts but one group appear to get more media attention.

What is funny is you aren't stating who you think should get the money and I can't tell. I guess a lot of people think a genius is a good commodity. Unfortunately they get the least amount of money spent on them

I just think people don't think and the media are way too powerful. It is always easier to think of caring without thinking of reality IMHO.

Neither A nor B would appreciate the gesture, in all honesty. C might not either, but C might just possibly make a difference to the world, unless... wait a second, an autistic guy invented BitTorrent with no funding - all bets on A. Or B, the hard begininnings might give him/her motivation to make the best of a new chance.
